Third District between 1911 and 1915.

This collection contains about 363 cubic feet of material documenting the Congressional career of Lunsford Richardson Preyer. Mr. Preyer (January 11, 1919-April 3, 2001) of Greensboro, North Carolina, served in the U.S. House of Representatives for twelve years (January 1969-January 1981).

The map was drawn by Lt. William S. Andrews of the 9th N.Y. Regiment and published by the authority of the Secretary of War, Office of the Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army.

A Sketch of the Catawba River at McCowans Ford was drawn by Charles Stedman and published in 1794. History of the Origin, Progress, and Termination of the American War. It shows the American Revolutionary War battle plan for the February 1, 1781, battle which took place in northwestern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, at McCowan's (later known as Cowan's Ford) on the Catawba River.

This collection consists of three diaries (1915-1917) written by John Ambrose Chalk documenting daily weather, agricultural activities, and interesting social events in Chowan County, North Carolina. He and his family were living on Mulberry Hill Farm while he managed the farm for Mr. Henry Wood of Edenton, N.C. Also included are transcriptions of the diaries provided by the donor along with family information, and indices to places mentioned and interesting events.

Papers (1929-1974) of Rear Admiral Wilson Durward Leggett, Jr., U.S. Naval Academy graduate of 1920 and Tarboro, North Carolina, native, including correspondence, photographs and photograph album, newspaper clippings, an order book, newsletters, journals, scrapbook, etc., documenting his Naval career and work with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Science and the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy.

Collection (ca. 1987 – 2004) of maps, photographs, correspondence, genealogical research on the descendents of Shadrack Allen, Sr., newspaper clippings, photocopies, and other printed sources, including transcriptions of manuscript materials, concerning President George Washington's historic "Southern Tour" of 1791, focusing especially on those events occurring in Pitt County, North Carolina.

Collection (1870-1878) of manuscripts and printed materials relating to the voyage of the Clipper Ship SS RINGLEADER from New York, NY to San Francisco, CA, via Shanghai, China, including a log book of the voyage by George E. Peer, photographic print of Captain W. E. Bray, ship's tracking chart, English and Swedish New Testaments, and 3 Chinese language newspapers. Purchased from Ten Pound Island Book Co.

Little Mothers League for Better Babies group portrait (ca. 1920), Kinston High School, Kinston, North Carolina; and articles (2003, 2006) in The Vineyard, A Publication of Glad Tidings for St. James Parish, Wilmington, NC written by Susan Block related to Adam Empie, an Episcopal minister there in the early 1800s, and a house in Wilmington built in 1799 and razed in 1955.

Papers (1947-1970) associate educational supervisor, North Carolina State Board of Education, 1947-1969; consisting of correspondence, records and reports, work-plans, vouchers, guides, directories, forms, training material, newsletters, publications, memoranda, office schedule, applications, etc.

Interview (1923-1998) with African-American woman from a rural background, who lived in the Statonsburg - Wilson, NC area, and who worked at the James Miller Tobacco Company in Wilson, NC, pertaining to family, sharecropping, work, and race relations. Collection contains material related to the Smiley family history in North Carolina collected by Joan and Ralph Smiley, photocopies of material related to the life and death of country music musician Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley, Jr. of Asheville, NC, who had toured with Don Reno and the Tennessee Cut-Ups, and clippings from the Raleigh News and Observer related to Klan violence in Eastern NC in 1967. Other material related to Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenville, to Agnes Wadlington Barrett, and to the Putnam Family have been moved to other collections.
