E. C. Winslow Records

This collection (1791-1960) documents the horse and mule business, farm operations, land transactions, saw mill operation, and other business enterprises of Edward Cyrus Winslow (b. 1886) of Tarboro, Edgecombe County, N.C. Included in the collection are correspondence, financial and legal records such as account books, ledgers, bills and receipts, contracts with other mule dealers, promissory notes, agricultural liens and chattel mortgages, deeds, and lease and rental agreements. Also included are superior court records, blueprints of farm tracts and dairy equipment, printed material, business and family photographs, and a small quantity of family correspondence.

Bogart Family Papers

Collection includes a letter written by Ann Elizabeth Bogart, Washington, N.C., to "My dear Aunt," January 8, 1865, describing wartime conditions in Washington, N.C., and vicinity, a 2-page partial transcription of the letter, a tintype of a woman (possibly Ann Elizabeth Bogart), and two color images of the gravestone for Ann Bogart and the plot where she is buried in Washington, N.C. Also included are research materials concerning David Nevius Bogart of Washington, N.C., and related to the Bogart, Biggs, O'Cain, Lucas, Bonner, Peyton, and Snoad families of Beaufort County, N.C. Photographs, genealogy notes, Bible records, and correspondence relate to the Smallwood, Williams, and Hassell families of Williamston, N.C. Letters related to brothers Will and Bruce Smallwood discuss Will's travels and death (1918) in Alaska and Bruce's life and death (after 1894) in Mexico.

Rhaford Lanier and 31st Reg. of North Carolina Militia Record Book

Rhaford Lanier of Duplin County, N.C., kept a record book for the Cypress Creek Company (mostly Duplin County men) associated with the 31st Regiment of N.C. Militia. It mainly covers 1840-1845 and 1861-1865 and includes, among other records, muster rolls, and allowances paid to soldiers' families (1864-1865).

Douglas P. Williams Collection

Thomas J. Jarvis was born on January 18, 1836 in Jarvisburg, North Carolina. He was a teacher, lawyer, and politician. The collection is dated February 1, 1890 and includes a letter from Thomas Jordan Jarvis in Greenville, North Carolina to Horace P. Gates in New York, New York. The strength of the collection is Jarvis' accepting Gates' invitation to meet Civil War veterans of the Roanoke Island Campaign and his description of his own service during the Civil War.

Medical Notebooks

Collection holds medical notebooks from various sources. Two notebooks found in the Laupus Library History Collection with no presently known provenance. One notebook is a dietetics notebook from E. Alexander at General Hospital, Patterson, New Jersey. The other notebook is Dr. Edward Beach Crowell's medical recipe book. An additional notebook was added to the collection in 2018. This notebook, purchased from Palinurus, was the business record for a Connecticut physician in the 1840s. Two more notebooks were added in 2022. They document medical products.

Croatan Archaeological Site Collection

This collection contains two artifacts excavated at the Cape Creek site (Croatan), Buxton, Dare County, North Carolina, in 1998 during the Croatan Archaeological Project, East Carolina University Professor Emeritus David Sutton Phelps, Director. The artifacts are a signet ring engraved with a "lion passant," prancing lion, crest (Specimen Acc. No. 1283-1297) with dimensions: 0.75" (l) x 0.5" (w) x 0.25" (d) and weight: 0.25 oz.; and a musket firing lock (Specimen Acc. No. 1283-1976). Research results indicate they are probably of early 17th century origin, but late 16th century origin can't be definitively ruled out.

Papers of Richard Herman McLawhorn, Jr. (1923-1987) of Ayden Township, Pitt County, North Carolina that are related to his childhood and his service during World War II as a bombardier on the bomber "Tail Heavy" with the U.S. Army Air Corps 485th Bomb Group.
