Much of this colletion remains unprocessed. The processed portion contains the administrative records, correspondence, clippings, ephemera, and scholarship and research materials relating to exploration and early settlement of the English Colonies in North Carolina, 1644-1700, of Herbert R. Paschal, Jr.

This collection contains 38 items that pertains to the life and career of Edward E. Johnson, who served as assistant to the Reverend Horace James, Superintendent of Negro Affairs in North Carolina, following the Civil War.

The Special Collections teaching collection consists of sources used for archival classroom instruction. Material within the collection was identified as out of scope for our regular collections, yet still useful as a primary or secondary source in our teaching sessions.

The John W. Warner Papers (1947-1986) document the career of filmmaker and entrepreneur John W. Warner, with a primary focus on the creation, financing, distribution, and later rediscovery of the independent film Pitch A Boogie Woogie. Dating chiefly from 1946 to 1958, with additional materials from 1986, the collection includes correspondence, legal and financial records, promotional materials, memorabilia, scripts, photographs, and audiovisual media that illuminate the business and creative challenges of independent filmmaking in the mid twentieth century. Supplementary materials reflect Warner's broader professional activities in North Carolina, including television production and local theater operations. Together, the papers provide insight into regional film production, film exhibition and promotion, and the processes through which a largely forgotten work was reclaimed and recontextualized by scholars and the public decades later.

This notebook is an 1870 student's notebook containing field notes of a Survey of the Coast of North Carolina done for the United States Coast Survey. It was likely kept by Jacob Bell Cornell (1848-1897), a member of the Class of 1872 at Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Of specific interest are a diagram and calculations associated with a lighthouse in the Pamlico Sound and references to Portsmouth Island and Swan Quarter.

Stuart Carr, a Greenville, N.C., native, describes his experiences working at the Greenville Fertilizer Company at the beginning of the Depression; and then his years with the E. B. Ficklen Tobacco Company in Greenville (1938-1950) with responsibility for the Carolina Leaf Tobacco Company, which sold American tobacco to Chinese manufacturers. He describes the tobacco business in China, the Japanese presence before and during WWII in China, and the loss of his company's assets with the Communist takeover in China. He goes on to discuss the more contemporary involvement of Thailand in the tobacco market and China's contemporary relationship with American tobacco companies.

The collection consists of photographs, diplomas and other educational records, correspondence, artifacts, and ephemera from Clara G. Gentry, a registered nurse.

Collection (1785-1824) containing photocopies of the original correspondence, tax lists, wills, records of enslaved persons, deed, property holders.

This collection (1976-2010) consists of Cypress Group News newsletters and rough drafts, photographs, correspondence, some meeting minutes, and trip documents concerning the Greenville Chapter (Cypress Group) of the Sierra Club. Also included are materials from the North Carolina Chapter of the Sierra Club concerning political action endorsements and conservation issues.
