This collection (1942-1999) contains papers related to the World War II service of Lt. Commander Godfrey Cheshire, Jr., in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Harold C. Thomas (DE-21) for which he was the commander for a year. Included are photocopies of the ship's logs for the USS Harold C. Thomas, correspondence (1990-1992) with the Destroyer Escort Commanding Officers Association about reunions, Cheshire's military records (1942-1945, 1947), photocopies of clippings and articles about the Thomas and other DEs, photocopies of certificates, photographs, and DVDs containing oral history interviews of Cheshire by family members.

Letterbooks (1864-1866, 1868) including correspondence, letterbooks of handwritten copies of letters, one speech, one cash book, one invoice book, one monthly statement book, one order book, two poems.

This collection consists of a single audio recording of the dedication ceremony for the Edward R. Murrow Transmitting Station, held on February 8, 1968. The recording documents remarks delivered by Edward R. Murrow in connection with the formal naming of the Voice of America Greenville Transmitting Station in his honor.

Papers of Irwin Shaw (1970) documenting the life and literary career of the prolific New York City-born American playwright, screenwriter, short story writer and popular novelist; consisting of uncorrected spiral bound proofs of parts one and two of Rich Man, Poor Man, Shaw's most popular novel, which became the source for the first television miniseries.

Papers, 1937-2001, of U. S. naval officer, including diaries, scrapbooks, orders, photographs, biographical accounts, and other materials, compiled by Commander Charles P. Trumbull (USN ret.), documenting his naval career from his appointment to the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, as a member of the Class of 1941 to his retirement from the Navy in 1961, and his post-retirement life, 1937-2001.

In this oral history, Carl Long (May 9, 1935 - January 12, 2015) discusses his professional baseball career (1952-1958) with the "Negro American League" and the Pittsburgh Pirates farm clubs including among others the Kinston (North Carolina) Eagles in the Carolina League where he was the first African American baseball player in the league; his time as the first African American deputy sheriff and first African American detective in Kinston; and his subsequent career as the first African American bus driver in Lenoir County (NC) from which he retired in 1995.

Harrison.
