Collection (1799-1897, 1913) including correspondence, 1835-1897, 1913, and financial records, 1799-1894, of New Bern, NC merchant, whose store was used by Union troops, and who was appointed "Superintendent of Poor Whites" for Craven County, NC.

Papers (1897-1972, undated) of a U. S. Naval officer, a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, 1905, who commanded the destroyer USS JARVIS during World War I, and as ordnance inspector at the U. S. Naval Ammunition Depot during World War II, consisting of correspondence, a war diary, orders, proceedings, reports, thesis, albums, photographs, postal cards, financial records, citations, certificates, biographies and miscellaneous.

The bulk of this donation is photographs relating to the Hertford County, North Carolina, Crawford and Riddick family ancestors of William Crawford Woods. He was the son of Louise Russell Crawford and Arthur R. Woods, Jr. and the grandson of Kate Wallace Riddick and Louis Russell Crawford. The Wallace side of the family is from Norfolk County, Virginia. Additionally, there are personal items, including correspondence, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, school notes, publications, and some legal records. The items included date back to the late 1800s up through the mid-1900s.

This collection contains material (1735-2004) detailing the history of the A.C. Monk Tobacco Company and the Monk Family of Farmville, Pitt County, North Carolina, including financial records, correspondence, tax documents, audit reports, wills, estate records, stock certificates, deeds, receipts, ledger, press releases, portfolios, and blueprints, land records, clippings, publications and broadsides, and family histories and Farmville histories. Also included are photographs (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, cartes de visite, negatives, 35 mm prints, large framed images), and charcoal portraits, of Monk, Quinerly, Turnage, and May family members of Farmville, North Carolina.

Papers of Mark Morrow (1981-1998, [Bulk: 1981-1986]) documenting the life and career of the Greer, South Carolina-raised American journalist, editor, photographer, and essayist; consisting of loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection volume entitled Images of the Southern Writer: Photographs (1981-1998), by Mark Morrow, including 17 letters, postcards and bills sent from Morrow to Stuart Wright regarding photographic orders, 1981-1986; also a letter from George Garrett to Stuart Wright enclosing a copy of Morrow's book, 1998.

National Youth Administration (1938-1942), and administrative assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force (1964-1971) among other positions.

Papers (ca. 1923-1978, undated [bulk: 1955-1975]) of a prominent Greenville, North Carolina attorney and Democratic Party activist, who served as administrative assistant to U. S. Senator Samuel J. Ervin, Jr., 1955-1975, notably during the Watergate Scandal, and including personal, social, business and political files, photographic prints, and oversized materials relating to his life in Washington, DC, and North Carolina. Also contains information related to the life of his wife Marie Hardee Spain, a Greenville, North Carolina, native.

Includes written and typed correspondence related to North Carolina and Pennsylvania artist Francis Speight's paintings, especially "Winter Scene." Also included is a presentation given by Claiborne T. Smith about Francis Speight.
