G. Harris Commonplace Book

Commonplace book (1801-1846) compiled by G. Harris, while surgeon aboard a British East India Company opium-carrying ship, the 750 ton Lady Flora, just off Singapore, wherein he documents his care of two patients, a comatose 6-year old boy suffering from fever, and a 30 year old woman who was hemorrhaging; lists of more than forty books; abstracts from them including medical titles such as "Diseases of the East Indies," "Johnstone on Diseases of Hot Climates," "Jenner on Vaccine Inoculation," Erasmus Darwin's "Zoonomia...," Burke's "Essay on the Sublime," and "Southey's Life of Nelson"; including an engraved stationer's seal from I. W. Norie and Co. on the front pastedown; a "A New and Correct Plan of the City of Bath, published in 1801, and a several loose notes.

Carl Whittlesey, 313 Engineers, 88th Div., WWI Diary

This candid and detailed World War I diary (April 25, 1918-March 12, 1919) was kept by Carl Whittlesey of Barton County, MO, during his service with the 313 Engineers 88th Division. He kept detailed entries regarding his training at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa, his participation in the Alsace Campaign in France, and his involvement in developing the war ravaged areas in Europe.

Royce Shingleton Papers

This collection includes the papers of retired History Professor from Darton College (now part of Albany State University in Georgia) and author Dr. Royce G. Shingleton. These papers document his literary career in the fields of Naval History and mid-nineteenth century American South. His books include High Seas Confederate (about John Newland Maffitt), John Taylor Wood: Sea Ghost of the Confederacy, and Richard Peters: Champion of the New South; he also contributed to William N. Still's book The Confederate Navy. A native of Stantonsburg, North Carolina, Shingleton has done genealogical work relative to the Shingleton family that is also found in this collection.
