William Henry von Eberstein Papers

Papers (1851-1887) consisting of a memoir, correspondence, legal papers, transcripts, military documents, genealogical materials, and photographic scans pertaining to William Henry von Eberstein (1821- ca. 1890). Descending from German and English aristocracy, he was born in St. Servan, France, and also lived on the Isle of Guernsey before becoming a mariner at age 13. A mariner, soldier, and farmer, von Eberstein moved to Chocowinity, Beaufort County, North Carolina, in 1851 and established himself in business. Later he captained various ships out of Washington, North Carolina, and served in the Confederate army.

Henry Otis Hyatt Papers

Ledger (1880-1897) of Kinston, N.C., physician, Dr. Henry Otis Hyatt, containing accounts of patients, medical cures for illnesses, and the constitution, by-laws, and minutes of the Kinston Commercial and Trade Association. A native of Tarboro, N.C., he moved his practice to Kinston, N.C., in 1872 and established Dr. Hyatt's Sanatorium for the Diseases of the Eye and General Surgery in 1891. Dr. Hyatt was one of the best known and skilled physicians in the state, and had one of the first "free clinics" in this country. Dr. Hyatt was also instrumental in the development of the Kinston Commercial and Trade Association, later known as "The Merchants Association."

Improved Order of Red Men, local chapter No. 16 (a historically white fraternity)

Membership Records (1898-1912) from The Improved Order of Red Men (I.O.R.M), the "Occoneechee Tribe" No. 16; a historically white fraternity. In 1834 the Improved Order of the Red Men was established exclusively for white men. The Membership Record of "Occoneeche Tribe" No. 16 Improved Order of the Red Men (1898-1912) is not associated to the Occaneechi Nation or any other Indigenous Nation. Local chapter No. 16 was headquarterd in Raleigh, North Carolina and would hold meetings there, as well as in New Bern, North Carolina. The "all-white clause" was not removed until the 1970's allowing women and people of color to join. The record book includes names, dates, ranking, session locations, and deaths of members.
