Papers (1851-1887) consisting of a memoir, correspondence, legal papers, transcripts, military documents, genealogical materials, and photographic scans pertaining to William Henry von Eberstein (1821- ca. 1890). Descending from German and English aristocracy, he was born in St. Servan, France, and also lived on the Isle of Guernsey before becoming a mariner at age 13. A mariner, soldier, and farmer, von Eberstein moved to Chocowinity, Beaufort County, North Carolina, in 1851 and established himself in business. Later he captained various ships out of Washington, North Carolina, and served in the Confederate army.

This collection contains the New Map of Palestine (1845) based mainly on the maps and drawings of Robinson and Smith with corrections and additions by Rev. Dr. Robinson, the 1808 Price-Strother Map also known as the First Actual Survey of North Carolina, and Messenger Handbook for 1879, which includes Goldsboro Messenger Map of North Carolina.

This collection contains the records of the Friends of Portsmouth Island including minutes (1990-2016), correspondence, by-laws, 1994 incorporation documents, grant documents, and issues (1991-2016) of their newsletter Doctor's Creek Journal. Also included are documents related to Homecomings at Portsmouth Village (1980, 1992-2016), a DVD produced by the National Geographic Society titled "Portsmouth: Island with a Soul," and a DVD of a project done by UNC-Chapel Hill students titled "Portsmouth—In Search of the Past."

Papers (1834-2006) including correspondence, land records, Bible records, genealogy notes, cemetery stone listings, and miscellaneous related to the Carpenter, Gay, and Hamner families of Albemarle County, Virginia.

Papers (1897-1972, undated) of a U. S. Naval officer, a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, 1905, who commanded the destroyer USS JARVIS during World War I, and as ordnance inspector at the U. S. Naval Ammunition Depot during World War II, consisting of correspondence, a war diary, orders, proceedings, reports, thesis, albums, photographs, postal cards, financial records, citations, certificates, biographies and miscellaneous.

A map entitled "To David Stone and Peter Brown, Esq. this first actual survey of the state of North Carolina taken by the subscribers is respectfully dedicated by their humble servants Jona. Price & John Strother," was drawn in 1808 and engraved by W. Harrison of Philadelphia, PA.

Congressman from the 1st District of NC, 1966-1989, including correspondence, reports, legislative bills, memorandums, clippings, etc. 378 boxes. 126.0 cubic feet.

The collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, brochures, and flyers related to the creation of the Parks, Recreation, and Conservation Program at East Carolina University in the late 1960s and the work of faculty member Ralph H. Steele.

Collection (1942-1945, 2006) of documents, maps, printed materials, etc., relating to his service as a Quartermaster 3d Class aboard the USS Ann Arundel (AP-76) during World War II, including autobiographical accounts of four voyages, and descriptions of its actions during the Normandy invasion of 6 June 1944.
