Papers of Madison Smartt Bell (1922-1997 [Bulk: 1957-1990], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the Nashville, Tennessee-born American novelist, including manuscript materials, proofs of published works, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, and oversized materials, relating primarily to his books Zero db and Other Stories, Barking Man, and The Washington Square Ensemble, and others.

Shadrach "Shade" I. Wooten was born in 1845 in North Carolina. He was married to Henrietta Louise Wooten and was guardian of his sisters sons James Yadkin Joyner and John P. Joyner. The collection spans 1874, 1880, and 1966 and includes notes, correspondence, and expense records pertaining to Shadrach Wooten's guardianship over his two nephews. The strength of this collection is expense records written by Shadrach Wooten.

Collection contains receipts from Nowell's Drug Store in Wendell, North Carolina. The receipts are from ordering medicinal and general supplies between 1915 and 1937.

Papers (1748-1904, 1965) of the Taylor, Moore, Read and other families of Carteret County, NC, consisting of land grants, deeds, a will, postcards, a certificate, a bill of lading, receipts, a promissory note, newspaper clippings, selling of a young enslaved child.

Photocopies of a diary (May 30-Aug. 7, 1862) kept by Alfred F. Williams of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry during the Civil War covering troop movements, his capture, and his exchange. Also includes a general store account record (1865-1867).

Membership Records (1898-1912) from The Improved Order of Red Men (I.O.R.M), the "Occoneechee Tribe" No. 16; a historically white fraternity. In 1834 the Improved Order of the Red Men was established exclusively for white men. The Membership Record of "Occoneeche Tribe" No. 16 Improved Order of the Red Men (1898-1912) is not associated to the Occaneechi Nation or any other Indigenous Nation. Local chapter No. 16 was headquarterd in Raleigh, North Carolina and would hold meetings there, as well as in New Bern, North Carolina. The "all-white clause" was not removed until the 1970's allowing women and people of color to join. The record book includes names, dates, ranking, session locations, and deaths of members.

Papers include Goforth's correspondence with the Navy Department following World War II and photograph from time at Woodward-Herring Hospital.
