The Vertical File contains brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, and other printed ephemeral material pertaining to North Carolina people, organizations, places, history, and events. Files on a county, for example, typically include brochures / maps pertaining to natural or historic sites, cultural events, and local businesses.

This collection consists of four minute books of the Old Sparta Primitive Baptist Church, Edgecombe County, North Carolina, for the period of 1899 through 1998.

Papers include photocopies of transcriptions of correspondence (1863-1864) written by Josiah Robert Peele Ellis of Wilson Co., North Carolina, to his wife Elizabeth Grimes Ellis while he was serving in Company C of the 43rd N.C. Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters were transcribed in 1977 by Hugh Buckner Johnston who also provided supplementary information. Also included are genealogy records for the Ellis and Hill families of Eastern North Carolina.

Collection (1868-1897) consisting of correspondence, contract and a newspaper.

Files (1969-1994) belonging to retired ECU Biology professor Dr. Vincent J. Bellis pertaining to the environmental impact of the Chicod Creek (North Carolina) channelization, the East Carolina University Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources, North Carolina Academy of Science, and material concerning the Sierra Club of NC and other environmental groups. Included are correspondence, affidavits, reports, notes, conference proceedings, environmental studies, and newsletters.

Papers (1943-1945) including correspondence with references made to signaling, semaphore operations, mail delivery problems, etc.

Papers (1851-1887) consisting of a memoir, correspondence, legal papers, transcripts, military documents, genealogical materials, and photographic scans pertaining to William Henry von Eberstein (1821- ca. 1890). Descending from German and English aristocracy, he was born in St. Servan, France, and also lived on the Isle of Guernsey before becoming a mariner at age 13. A mariner, soldier, and farmer, von Eberstein moved to Chocowinity, Beaufort County, North Carolina, in 1851 and established himself in business. Later he captained various ships out of Washington, North Carolina, and served in the Confederate army.

Account book (1851-1852, 1864) of Wilmington, NC resident, containing brief financial accounts and meditations.

Papers (1861-1868) including correspondence, information on defense, wartime letters written to his future wife, assorted incidents.

Records (1872-1892) including correspondence, minute book, ledger, social organizations, fraternal organizations, debts and credits, dues, taxes, fines, and miscellaneous.
