This collection includes 13 pieces of correspondence addressed to Mathias Embry of Vincennes, Indiana during the years 1863-1864. The bulk of the collection was written by or about John Posey (1842?-1864) and Charles Newton (1843?-1864), both Black soldiers who served in the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. The letters provide a glimpse of the experience and motivation of Black soldiers serving during the Civil War and the effect of the war on both the enlisted and non-combatants.

In this oral history interview Max Ray Joyner, Sr. discusses his involvment with East Carolina including his time as a student and his later work with The ECU Foundation, Alumni Association, Pirate Club, and Board of Trustees, serving on search committees, and endowing scholarships. He also mentions his wife's involvment with East Carolina.

This collection contains documents (1821-1994, bulk 1860s-1910s) related to the Newsom family, especially Marion Eaton Newsom, of Littleton, Warren and Halifax Counties, North Carolina. Included are correspondence, land records, legal records, financial papers, and a family history written by Marion E. Newsom (1909, addendum 1911) about the Newsom and Nicholson families. Some material also relates to the Whitaker and Heptinstall families. A large part of this collection also documents the history of Littleton and institutions there such as schools, churches, and Littleton Female College.

The Teachers Training Quarterly includes ten volumes of four issues each beginning in 1914 and ending in 1923 when the quarterly was replaced by the yearbook and student newspaper.
