Papers (1862-1916) of a private in the 5th Minnesota Volunteers, 1862-1864, who was present at the siege of Vicksburg, MS and who later became a farmer, consisting of correspondence, military orders, newspapers clippings, a farm journal, ledger books, genealogical material, poetry, letters, etc.

Darrell, and the ships Sportsman, and Harrisburg (v. 1, 1860-1865), commander of the ship Columbia (v. 2, 1865-1870), master of the ship Peruvian (v. 3, 1870-1872), and captain of the clipper ship Great Admiral (v. 4, 1874-1878), illustrating his career aboard sailing ships trading between England, the east and west coasts of America, Southeast Asia (Singapore, Manila, and Hong Kong), and Tokyo, Japan, including highly detailed and dramatic accounts of shipboard life and commercial operations.

Papers (1892-1940, 1960-1964, 1972, 1988) consisting of correspondence, pamphlets, photographs, clippings, newspapers and a book pertaining to the life of Rev. David Wells Herring, a Baptist missionary in China. The book titled Papa Wore No Halo was written about Herring by his daughter Susan Herring Jefferies Taynton.

Papers (1914-1988, undated) of David Balcombe, an enlisted man in the 1st Battalion, 4th Queen's West Surrey Territorial Regiment (Reserve) in India during World War I, 1914-1917; he later served as an instrument mechanic in India and Egypt in the Royal Flying Corps, 1917-1918. Consists primarily of correspondence (1914-1919) from David Balcombe to his parents in South Norwood, Surrey, England, plus clippings, ephemera, and photographs of India. Also included are letters (1928-1935) from Walter George Courtice to his sister Ruby R. Courtice, during his residency in Durban, South Africa.

Collection (1899-1957 [Bulk: 1899-1954]) of diaries by Rev. J.G. Cassel, a Brethren of Christ missionary in Guatemala, 1899-1957; also an untitled history of missionary work in Guatemala by William Haymaker, written in 1947, describing his missionary career, 1887-1947. 8 vols. This collection contains a journal (December 15, 1861-April 15, 1865) kept by Isaac Liscomb, Master (Commander) of the U.S. Brig Dragoon. Dragoon was a private merchant vessel (formerly called the Remington) leased or purchased by the Union Army for use in the Civil War. As part of General Burnside's fleet, the Dragoon was involved in the Battle of Roanoke Island. Liscomb kept detailed accounts of that battle and of the voyages the ship made during the Civil War to transport troops and supplies to ports including Port Royal and Folly Island (SC), Pensacola (FL), and Morehead City (NC).

These papers (1848-1882) belonged to Johnson H. Bryan, Jr.(1824-1883) of Craven County, North Carolina. Included are deeds, statements of debt and obligation, receipts, receipts for purchase and sale of enslaved people, correspondence, mortgages, bankruptcy papers, and a resolution of complaint related to tariff discriminations and maintenance deficiencies on the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad.
