This collection consists of records (1968-1971) such as minutes, monthly reports, correspondence, and clippings related to the founding of the Coastal Plain Mental Health Advisory Board, later called the Pitt County Mental Health Authority. Also included are newsletters (1979, 1988-1993), personnel listings, brochures, an annual report (1983/1984), and retirement related items (1997) related to Dr. Stephen K. Creech's 23-year tenure as Area Director of the Pitt County Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Center in Greenville, North Carolina.

Contained in this collection are materials originally owned by Dr. William C. Groves including medical lecture tickets from Pennsylvania College and a patient's death certificate.

The collection includes photographs, correspondence, booklets, and other mixed materials from Dr. Andrew Best's military service, medical career, civic work, and personal life.

Papers (1865-1954, undated) consisting of correspondence, speeches, financial and legal records, a minute book, a guest register, photographs, newspapers, genealogical notes, deeds, etc., related to the career of Dr. Charles O'Hagan Laughinghouse (1871-1930) of Greenville, N.C., and to the Laughinghouse and related Stokes families. Besides having a successful practice in Greenville, Dr. Laughinghouse was a respected member of the North Carolina State Board of Health for several years beginning in 1911, served as president of the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina in 1916 and 1917, and served as State Health Officer from 1926 until his death in 1930.

A journal (1/19 – 6/29/1859) written by Augustus M. Handley, a young British Army officer in the 19th Regiment of Foot, of a voyage from Gravesend, England, to Calcutta, India, aboard the sailing ship H.M.S. Bucton Castle with Captain Moorsom commanding. The journal contains a detailed description of daily life aboard the Bucton Castle, including various personalities on board, daily activities, an explanation of the ship's time-keeping, a drawing of the ship with parts labeled, notes on the how-to of navigation, changing weather conditions, sea conditions, and meetings with the various ships along the way.

This collection consists of items taken from a Japanese sailor during World War II when he was taken prisoner after being shipwrecked in the East China Sea off Okinawa.

Papers (1885-2009) of prominent Washington, NC, attorney Junius Daniel Grimes, who was member of the firm Ward and Grimes, and his family and business associates, including correspondence, legal records, land records, financial papers, publications, taxes, installments, bills, survey, map, etc.

Papers (1944-1998, undated) of Matthew T. Lewis, teacher in Pitt County, N.C., schools and principal of Stokes Elementary School, a segregated, predominantly African American public school in Stokes, Pitt County, North Carolina, including correspondence with the Pitt County Superintendent Arthur S. Alford, announcements of retirement, newspaper clippings, programs from the dedication of Matthew Lewis Field and Picnic Shelter, reports, photographic prints and photograph albums.

This collection includes 108 Chatham County, North Carolina, warrants (1804-1840); 2 Onslow County, North Carolina, grants (1788, no date); and 1897 financial receipt with 4 handwritten medicinal cures by Wyley M. Cates of Teer and Alamance County, NC, and print ads for his cures.

Carol Leigh Humphries, a native of Person County, N. C., and graduate of East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University), describes her work with Baptist missions in the United States and then, in more detail, her several decades of work with the Baptist Mission in Nigeria.
