This log kept my Midshipman R. H. Hammond chronicles the HMS Mars on its journeys in the Mediterranean from March 1861 through December 1862. The Mars was launched in 1848 and is the sixth ship in the British Royal Navy using this name. Besides documenting travels to Tripoli in Libya, Larnaca in Cyprus, Latakia in Syria, and Sidon and Beyrout (Beirut) in Lebanon, the log also contains manuscript charts and ink sketches of ports.

Locations include Fayetteville, Elizabeth City, High Point, Wilmington, Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, Belhaven, Edenton, Pitt County, Camp Lejeune, Reidsville, Rocky Mount, St. Pauls Washington and New Bern. Subjects include the Askew Family of Hertford County, Greensboro College, Fayetteville flood of 1908, the Confederate Ram Albemarle and the tobacco industry.

Collection contains a variety of items relating to Eastern North Carolina especially including a photograph of East Carolina Teacher's College scene (ca. 1940's); a theater Program (ca. 1933/34) for a play presented by The Episcopal Junior Guild, Austin Building, East Carolina Teacher's College; and a Measles in Quarantine Keep Your Babies Away From Measles Broadside (4/7/1934) posted on the home of Ella Viola McGowan when she had the measles. Also included are photographs (some unidentified) of World War II era of which several pertain to military bases such as the 657th Engineer Topographic Battalion (40th Infantry Division, U.S. Army), and one is of Cecil May in U.S. Marine corporal uniform; a photocopy of a letter (1913) containing reminiscences of Confederate veteran John W. Vernelson (of N.C. State Troops) war service and describing the Veterans Reunion at Gettysburg, PA; receipts (1909-1910) for sales by Crown Bottling Works in New Bern, NC; Pitt County, NC, land grants and deeds (1782-1837) related to the Boyd, Edwards, and Nobles families; Bible Records and birth and death records for the Eldridge, Wilder/Hatsell, Pittman, Moore, Sewell, and Davis families; and the book (2011) "One of the Lucky Ones," Edgar Cannon's Contributions in World War II. Other materials (1856-2001) consist of manuscripts, research clippings, notes, photocopies, photographic prints, programs, notebooks, and newspapers, relating to the history and genealogy of Eastern North Carolina, especially Robersonville and Williamston in Martin County, NC. Also included are a 1941 color silent 16mm film about Greenville and slides (ca. 1970) documenting tobacco and old houses in Pitt County, NC.

Collection (2005) of research material regarding the Battle of Wyse Forks, North Carolina, compiled by the donor for Through the Eyes of Soldiers: The Battle of Wyse Forks, Kinston, North Carolina, March 7-10, 1865, by Tom J. Edwards and William Rowland, edited by Ashleigh D. Brothers, published by the Lenoir County Historical Association, Kinston, N.C., in 2006, including typescripts of unit histories, excerpts from official records and published works, and manuscript maps of the battle.

Jessamine Shumate (1902-1990), a native of Henry County, Virginia, was an artist, historian, and cartographer. She died in Greenville, North Carolina, where her daughters were living.

Papers (1896-1917) including letters and reminiscences, biographical clipping, comments on World War I, daily weather conditions, postal services between US and China.

Papers of Mary Eloise von Schrader Jarrell (1965-2012, undated) documenting the life and literary career the St. Louis, Missouri-born, memoirist and patron of the arts, who was the widow and literary executor of poet and educator Randall Jarrell (1914-1965) consisting of correspondence with Stuart Wright, typescripts, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, printed materials, and oversized materials relating primarily to her life with Randall Jarrell and the promotion of his works and literary influence on American poetry.

Papers (ca. 1857-1962) of the Barnhill and Roebuck families of Robersonville, Martin County, N.C., including correspondence and scrapbooks related to school life at Davenport College in Lenoir, N.C., and St. Mary's School in Raleigh, N.C., and Fairfax Hall in Basic, Va., in the 1910s and 1920s, and college life (1929-1930) at East Carolina Teachers' College (now East Carolina University) in Greenville, N.C. Also included are financial records and land records (especially for the Roebuck family for the 1870s through the 1920s), photographs and ECTC annuals.
