Bark Catalpa Collection
#1123Account book (29 December 1863 – 6 July 1866) kept by Captain Paul Stevens of the Bark Catalpa recording the state of his financial dealings with the owners of the ship, including accounts for his salary, crews' wages and expenses; spending for provisions, ship chandlers, ship carpenters, charterers, pilotage, etc., during the ship's voyages back and forth between Shanghai, China and Nagasaki, Japan; probably originating in New York, NY.
Papers of William Styron (1930-2007, undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Newport News, Virginia-born American novelist and essayist, including correspondence; manuscripts, photographic prints, proofs of published materials, printed material, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection and oversized materials, by or about William Styron, Malcom Cowley, James Jones, Eugene Genovese, and others.
This collection contains material (1735-2004) detailing the history of the A.C. Monk Tobacco Company and the Monk Family of Farmville, Pitt County, North Carolina, including financial records, correspondence, tax documents, audit reports, wills, estate records, stock certificates, deeds, receipts, ledger, press releases, portfolios, and blueprints, land records, clippings, publications and broadsides, and family histories and Farmville histories. Also included are photographs (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, cartes de visite, negatives, 35 mm prints, large framed images), and charcoal portraits, of Monk, Quinerly, Turnage, and May family members of Farmville, North Carolina.
Letters and ephemera (1926-1929) related to the life of Agnes Wadlington [Barrett], who was born in Trigg County, Kentucky in 1902, before she took a job at East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) as secretary to the president of the college. Also found with these papers are many photographs of members of the Putnam family of Murray, Kentucky. The only connection between Mrs. Barrett and the Putnam family appears to be that both she and Louise Vey Putnam Carter's husband Herbert Leland Carter both worked at East Carolina University. An 1982 engagement calendar kept by Mrs. Barrett documents her life during retirement in Greenville, North Carolina.

Thomas R. Lundin was born March 24, 1982, in Madison, Wisconsin. After completing high school in 2000 in Greenville, North Carolina, he joined the U.S. Army and served as an Apache Helicopter crew chief for 3rd Infantry Division in Kuwait during the Iraqi War of 2003. This collection contains papers, a diary, maps, military manuals, and ephemera related to his service, especially during the Iraqi War.

Collection includes papers related to the personal life and non-university activities of East Carolina University History Professor Lawrence Fay Brewster (ECU professor from 1945 to 1969) for whom the Lawrence F. Brewster Classroom Building on campus was named in 1974. Included are materials (1857-1945) related to his parents and ancestors, Brewster's early life and education through earning his Ph.D., his teaching job at Cranleigh School for Boys in St. Petersburg, Florida, and his work with the Works Progress Administration as Research Editor for the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina. The vast majority (1960-1991) of the collection concerns his work as historiographer for the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina and writing his "History of the Protestant Episcopal, The Diocese of East Carolina."

Alex Albright Collection
#1233Collection contains mainly material related to the African American Navy Band members who served at the Great Lakes Naval Base during World War II (1942-1945). This material includes programs and related material from the February 28-March 2, 2003, salute to these African American band members that was held in Chicago, Illinois, and from former band member Carl Foster's participation in a symposium sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of History in 2003. Other material includes programs (1987) for concerts by the North Carolina Jazz Ensemble and a 1945 USO Hawaii booklet. A second focus of this collection is on the lives of Alex Albright's family members including uncles on his mother's side and their involvement with the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and World War II service and death.
