This collection includes letters mailed to Thomas Milton Carr, Jr. from May through December 1864 while he was serving in Company B of 2nd North Carolina Junior Reserves. Correspondents were mainly family members living in Martindale in Mecklenburg County, N.C., and nearby counties. Topics are news related to the Civil War, events of daily life and the effect of the war on them, and information related to friends and family members serving in the Confederate Army.

Collection contains a World War II diary (1943-1944) kept by a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps while participating in bombing missions over Germany.

Papers (1941-1945) of U. S. Naval officer, graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy (1941), including his Reminiscences of World War II.

Papers (1943-1945) including official war diary, and a narrative detailing activities of the MILLER and its crew, as well as other ships, in the Pacific Theatre. Narrative written by crew member William L. Hewes, Jr.

Papers (1939-1943) include correspondence from a U.S. naval officer describing life on the minesweeper USS YMS-62 (1942-1943) during World War II while stationed in New Orleans and Burwood in Louisiana, at sea, and in Algeria. Lieutenant Commander Brown also records his impressions of Algeria in these letters.

Papers (1942-2002), entitled "John Paul Jones and the American Navy 1775," written while a student at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, Raleigh, NC, including original handwritten manuscript, 1942 (28 p.), draft typescript, 1942 (14 p.), and spiral bound version self-published, 2002 (28 p.).

This collection consists of a large scrapbook dedicated to B. Bruce Sugg, Jr., upon his retirement from the Board of Directors for the North Carolina National Bank. The scrapbook includes ads, articles, and photographs related to the State Bank Trust Co. and the North Carolina National Bank. The two banks merged in 1969, while Sugg, Jr., was Senior Vice President and Trust Officer. According to sugg family members, the ads were written by Mr. Sugg.

Video interview with Admiral William M. A. Greene (1920-2007) on his time as a student at East Carolina Teachers College and his involvement with East Carolina University as an alumnus. Greene discusses student life, his experience as a member of the football team, teachers he had, friends he made, and values instilled by East Carolina.

This collection includes 13 pieces of correspondence addressed to Mathias Embry of Vincennes, Indiana during the years 1863-1864. The bulk of the collection was written by or about John Posey (1842?-1864) and Charles Newton (1843?-1864), both Black soldiers who served in the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. The letters provide a glimpse of the experience and motivation of Black soldiers serving during the Civil War and the effect of the war on both the enlisted and non-combatants.

Papers (1861 - 2025, undated) documenting the archaeological excavations of the Confederate defensive fortifications, river obstructions and fish trap on the River Neuse below Kinston, NC, and the Confederate ironclad ram CSS Neuse, relating to Capt. Joseph H. Price, commander of the CSS Neuse, and relating to Lenoir County, N.C., history in general including correspondence, notes, photographic prints and negatives (black and white), and publications.

Flyers, invitations, and programs from medical history lecture series put on by East Carolina University Medical History Club and then Medical History Interest Group.

Collection contains material related to the Smiley family history in North Carolina collected by Joan and Ralph Smiley, photocopies of material related to the life and death of country music musician Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley, Jr. of Asheville, NC, who had toured with Don Reno and the Tennessee Cut-Ups, and clippings from the Raleigh News and Observer related to Klan violence in Eastern NC in 1967. Other material related to Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenville, to Agnes Wadlington Barrett, and to the Putnam Family have been moved to other collections.
