The Records of John McDade Howell include official and personal correspondence, speeches, reports, and other miscellaneous papers developed during his tenure as Chancellor.

The Round Table Book Club Records document the history and activities of the Round Table Book Club of Greenville, North Carolina, from approximately 1910 through 2014. The collection contains constitutions and bylaws, meeting minutes, attendance records, yearbooks and annual programs, correspondence, event materials, historical writings, photographs, artifacts, and audiotape recordings. The ship's log of the US Brig Porpoise, dated 19 February 1845 to 16 June 1846, was kept during a cruise from New York to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. It details navigational statistics, weather reports, sightings and hailing of other ships, and punishments of crew infractions. The author was probably Midshipman Benjamin Lee Henderson and the log was signed in fifteen places by Lt. Commander William E. Hunt.

The Nathaniel Pettit Joy Collection (1913-1919 [Bulk: 1918-1919], undated) consists primarily of letters he and his wife Mary received from two New Jersey soldiers and two New Jersey sailors written to Nathaniel Pettit Joy and his wife Mary of Groveville, New Jersey. The soldiers, Raymond "Bud" Danley and William "Bill" Inman were privates in the Headquarters Company of the 309th Infantry Infantry, 78th Division of the American Expeditionary Force; they wrote from England, France and Fort Dix (New Jersey); the sailors were A. C. Griffiths sailor aboard the battleship USS ARIZONA in 1918-1919; and Cousin Edwin, who served aboard the USS SIBONEY, a hospital ship, 1918-1919; the collection also includes several miscellaneous items, including French postcards, photographs of unidentified soldiers and sailors, and a letter written from a Cpl. Walter P. Rogers, who was a guard at a Russian prisoner of war camp in Chemnitz, Germany early in 1919.

Papers of Tom Wolfe (1968-1982) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Richmond, Virginia-born American novelist, journalist, critic and essayist, associated with the New Journalism literary movement, consisting of proofs of three of his published works, including The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968), Drawings by Tom Wolfe In Our Time, (1980), Tom Wolfe: The Purple Decades, A Reader (1982) & loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection.

Papers of Nancy [Anna Westcott] Hale (1971) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Boston, Massachusetts-born journalist, novelist, playwright, and artist; consisting of an unbound, oversized, galley proof of her novel Secrets (1971).

Papers of Anne Tyler (1980, 1983) documenting the life and literary career the noted Minneapolis, Minnesota-born American novelist and short story writer; consisting of loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection pertaining to The Best American Short Stories, edited by Anne Tyler (1983); also an oversized archival folder including a review by Anne Tyler of Toni Cade Bambara's novel, The Salt Eaters, in the Washington Post Book World (30 March 1980).
