The collection contains the papers of Lavinia "Venie" Roberts (1833-1923), a native of New Bern, North Carolina who wrote an unpublished memoir of her experience during the Civil War. In addition to the memoir, the collection includes material documenting the history of New Bern, the life of wealthy white Southerners during the Antebellum and Reconstruction periods, the lives of those enslaved from the point of view of their enslavers, the efforts of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in New Bern, and genealogical material related to the Cole and Roberts family.

"Wilse Frazier: Remembrances of a Former Slave," by Helen Caulfield Madine Gregory and Robert Schmidt Fulghum, Ph.D., December 2000, 9 pages (Photocopy typescript relating their childhood their childhood memories of Wilse Frazier, a 110 year old freed man, formerly enslaved who lived on the "The Woodlands" plantation near Clopper, Maryland, who died in 1949, aged approximately 110 years. The manuscript includes bibliography and reproductions of photographs of Mr. Frazier, the author's families, and the plantation.

Papers (ca. 1867-2007, undated) including photographic negatives, prints, slides and manuscript materials; also video cassettes and moving picture film reels produced during his career as a professional photographer for the Greenville Daily Reflector newspaper, 1952-1972; as bureau chief for the Raleigh News and Observer in Eastern North Carolina; and as news director for television stations WITN-TV, WNCT-TV, 1972-1997; also including personal materials relating to his family and to William W. Speight.

Includes a book and photographs belonging to Dr. Evan A. Erwin.

Papers include account books, booklet, and receipts for services rendered.

Memorial Tribute (undated) to Lieutenant Martin H. Ray, Jr., US Naval officer, who dies in the Battle of Midway on June 6, 1942.

Oral history interviews relating to his youth and his experiences, 1917-1972, as the second African-American midshipman to attend the United States Naval Academy (Class of 1941) for approximately three weeks during the summer of 1937, and his education and career as a teacher in the Washington, DC school system, 1942-1972. William and Harry Whittaker were brothers who both served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. William mainly served in West Germany while Harry was sent to Vietnam in 1967. Their letters to each other cover the years 1964 to 1968 and discuss both basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and their service in West Germany and Vietnam. Also included are numerous photographs taken by Harry while he was stationed in Vietnam.

Papers (1862-1914) concern the life of Benjamin Holt Ticknor (1842-1914) of Boston, Massachusetts, after he enlisted in the 45th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Co. G, in 1862 during the Civil War. Included are thirteen letters written to his father during the war with nine (November 1863-March 1864) of them written from Fort Totten in New Bern, N.C. Several documents relate to a court martial and trial he participated in; other documents relate to his postwar involvement in the Loyal Legion and genealogy research. Also included are photographs of his funeral procession. Transferred (not purchased) from Denning House Antiquarian Books & Manuscripts.

Autobiography of Joseph Greene Boyette's life from his childhood (born 1929) upbringing in eastern North Carolina until 1952 when he got out of the U.S. Navy and headed to Duke University to take classes. Boyette actually starts his memoir with some information on the extremely hard upbringing his mother (born 1903) had and also includes a section of notes that his mother wrote about the childhood experiences of her 3 boys.
