Papers (1845-1918, 1967) of lawyer who lived in Martin County, Franklin County, and Smithfield in Brunswick County and was active in Reconstruction Era Republican politics, consisting of correspondence, receipts, vouchers, court dockets, legal papers, annual railroad pass, financial records, advertisements.
This collection contains eleven military grid coordinate system maps (1935, 1938, 1943-1945) used in World War II fighting. The maps belonged to Cmdr. Lynn Forbes Barry, a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1941. During the war he served as a Lt. Commander in the Navigation Dept. on the USS Nevada (but not at Pearl Harbor). Several maps (1944) document the French Northern Coast, Southeastern Coast, Mediterranean area, and Marseille region (1935, 1943-1944). Others are of the Italian East Coast and former Yugoslavia West Coast (1938), Okinawa (1945), and Iwo Jima (marked Secret). Most have marks indicating enemy fortifications, and also airfields, roads, train routes, and coastlines, and some marks are unidentified.
Papers (1767-1976) of three generations of Beaufort County, NC, lawyers named William B. Rodman, including correspondence, letterpress books, speeches, financial records, legal files, farm records, clippings, printed material, newspapers, photographs, genealogical material and miscellaneous. Originally from New York, the Rodmans married into the prominent Blount family in Beaufort County, NC. The Rodmans also held local and state government offices and were judges.
Papers (1861 - 2025, undated) documenting the archaeological excavations of the Confederate defensive fortifications, river obstructions and fish trap on the River Neuse below Kinston, NC, and the Confederate ironclad ram CSS Neuse, relating to Capt. Joseph H. Brewster Classroom Building on campus was named in 1974. Included are materials (1857-1945) related to his parents and ancestors, Brewster's early life and education through earning his Ph.D., his teaching job at Cranleigh School for Boys in St. Petersburg, Florida, and his work with the Works Progress Administration as Research Editor for the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina. The vast majority (1960-1991) of the collection concerns his work as historiographer for the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina and writing his "History of the Protestant Episcopal, The Diocese of East Carolina."
