Papers (ca. 1890s-2003) of Nina Belle Redditt (1923-2005) and family of Greenville, Pitt County, N.C. Nina Belle Redditt, who served as a DKC officer in the U.S. Navy for 31 years, was the daughter of George Edward Harris, Sr., and Isabella "Belle" Augusta Hearne Harris. Included are scattered correspondence (1905-1907, 1930s-1950s, 1975), photographs and photocopies of photographs (1890s-1978), clippings (1950s-2003), and genealogical notes related to the Harris, Hearne and Moore families of Pitt County and the Redditt family of Beaufort County, N.C. Also included are two books: Old Southern Songs of the Period of the Confederacy, and Southern Sidelights by Rev. William E. Cox. Additional material relates to Nina Belle Redditt's Navy career and includes a photograph album (1947-1955) of service in Malta, Bainbridge, Maryland, and the Portrex war exercise in Puerto Rico; and photographs (1953) and documents (1956, 1963) related to the Korean War Military Armistice Agreement and the United Nations Command's involvement.
This collection contains 8" x 10" photographs taken by Edwin A. Martin when he was a professor in the Philosophy Department at North Carolina State University and Curator of Photography at the North Carolina State University Visual Arts Center in the 1990s. The tobacco images cover a season of tobacco farming in the Wendell, North Carolina, area from planting through auction. The images of Harkers Island, North Carolina, document the daily life of the local fishing population. A 1998 publication Hope for a Good Season containing some of these Harkers Island photographs is also included.
Documents and printed materials relating to Greenville, NC including high school and college programs, postcards, World War II ration books, etc. Also, genealogical correspondence, notes and research files pertaining to the Davenport, Flanagan, Neville, and related families of Pitt, Edgecombe, Halifax, and Nash counties, North Carolina.
Papers (1762-1902, undated) documenting the life of the Noble family from the Chicod Township of Pitt County and the Creeping Swamp and Swift Creek areas of Craven County. The bulk of the collection includes material related to the activities of Celina Clark Noble (1829-) and her family and includes land records, land description and surveys, promissory notes, mortgages and other legal papers, bank notes, ballads, financial papers, receipts, etc. Also included is the Civil War correspondence (1864-1865) of Corporal E. E. (Evans Everette) Noble (1829-1895) of the 67th Regiment North Carolina Infantry to his wife Susan J. Noble (1837-1873) while serving throughout Eastern North Carolina.

Papers (1920-1967, undated) of a North Carolina lawyer and politician consisting of clippings, pamphlets, speeches, announcement of a law partnership, report entitled "A Ten-Year Plan for North Carolina," letters, articles from magazines, ephemera and photographs.

Collection contains Greenville and Pitt County, North Carolina, related photographs and ephemera (1917-2007) concerning the Pickwick Book Club, Girl Scouts, Greenville High School, and the Greenville Rotary Club, as well as documents commending the 7th Division American Expeditionary Force for their service in World War I. A large portion of the collection relates to the genealogy of the Goree, Kittrell, Hardee/Hardy, Tull, Proctor, and Hinton families, especially in Eastern North Carolina.

[Abijah S.] Pell, 8th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops; submitted at Ringgold Barracks, near Rio Grande City, Starr County, Texas (31 August 1865). Printed form. 31" x 10.5" 1 item. 1 p. Note: Filed oversized ; document records names, ranks, enlistment data, and service records of a 17-man detachment ; troops were paid $16 per month for periods varying from 8 months to 10 months, 16 days ; established in 1848 as Camp Ringgold, the post was named for Bvt. Maj. Samuel Ringgold, the first American officer to die at the Battle of Palo Alto during the Mexican War ; Ringgold Barracks was renamed Fort Ringgold in 1878 ; Ringgold Barracks had been abandoned by the US Army during the civil war and was only reestablished in 1865 when this detachment of the 29th Regiment US Colored Troops arrived ; the army sold the fort to a local school district in 1944 ; prior to serving at Ringgold Barracks, the 29th Regiment had served as part of the defensive force for Washington DC ; digital copy available ; brittle, fragile, some foxing ; needs conservation.
Collection consists of a two volumes titled "Journal of a Cruise from Norfolk, Virginia to the Pacific Ocean in the United States Frigate United States, Isaac Hull, Esq'r, Commander" kept by Philadelphian midshipman Lawrence Penington from 4 December 1823, through 22 April 1827. United States was one of six frigates authorized to be constructed by the Naval Act of 1794 and it served as the flagship for Commodore Hull who was head of the American naval squadron on the Pacific Coast of South America. Penington documents navigation statistics, weather reports and daily ship life, along with the larger issues of interaction between the American naval squadron and British, Spanish, Chilean, Colombian and Peruvian naval and military counterparts.
