This collection contains about 363 cubic feet of material documenting the Congressional career of Lunsford Richardson Preyer. Mr. Preyer (January 11, 1919-April 3, 2001) of Greensboro, North Carolina, served in the U.S. House of Representatives for twelve years (January 1969-January 1981).

Collection (1855-1958) of manuscript and printed materials compiled by Antoinette S. Jenkins, including a history of St. Peter's Church, Salem, Massachusetts, 1958; notebook containing records of the botanical research conducted by Hugh M. Neisler of Taylor, Georgia, 1866-1881; photocopy typescript account of the 45th Georgia Infantry Regiment (C.S.A.) during Civil War battles at Richmond, Cedar Run, 2nd Manassas, Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown, and others, by Joseph A. Walker, 1864; General Store sales records of Nicholas Bascom Jenkins from Nashville, Nash County, North Carolina, 1905-1935; genealogical materials relating to the Letcher, Mitchell, Neisler [Neischler], Jenkins, and Howard families of Nash county, North Carolina; Taylor, Georgia; and Salem, Massachusetts), 1897; also letters and obituary and newspaper articles, including an excerpt from Western Maryland College yearbook relating to on George Stockton Wills, of Westminster, Maryland, 1930-1956; in English, Greek and Latin language.

The majority of this collection pertains to James V. Lobell of Maryland who was a leader in the footwear industry from 1913 to 1961; he founded Cavalier Shoe Polish Company which was purchased by KIWI in 1961. Included are business and personal correspondence, photographs, reports, shoe catalogs, and bound issues of Shoes and Leather Reporter (1910s-1920s). Papers also reflect his involvement with the Boy Scouts, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (especially during WWII), and Business Education among other topics. The donor wrote his master's thesis on Lobell's life and materials related to his research are included, too. Unrelated to Mr. Lobell are clippings (1969-1978) and posters concerning Rose High School (Greenville, North Carolina) football and baseball teams; a broadside "Chronology of Pitt County History" created by Jessamine Shumate (1953); and North Carolina public school education-related documents (1906-1933).

Papers (Nov. 1952) of Defense Department, Research and Development Board member, Dr. Paul R. Beall taking part in exercise aboard USS Coral Sea (CVB 43), including ship's booklets, rosters, schematic drawing, schedule, and photographs.

This collection contains a logbook (1891-1929) kept by William Hadlock Gooding (b. June 1, 1856, d. September 7, 1936), the purser for the barkentine Olive Thurlow. During this time, Olive Thurlow, which operated out of Philadelphia, travelled to New York, Boston, Savannah, Washington, Port Royal, Barbadoes, Buenos Aires, and Montevideo. Other entries in the logbook refer to the settling of accounts in Boston by Gooding for his time with the bark Grace Deering (1901-1902); and accounts (1906-1909, 1925-1929) related to his life in Yarmouth, Cumberland County, Maine.

127 World War II era photographs depicting members of the United States Marine Corps. African American servicemembers in photographs are assumed to be members of the 51st Defense Battalion, commonly refered to as the Montford Point Marines, the first African American unit in the Marine Corp. Also included in the collection are photographs of white Marine Corps members as well as a number of unidentified personal photographs, many of which depict African American women and children.
