Papers include photocopies of transcriptions of correspondence (1863-1864) written by Josiah Robert Peele Ellis of Wilson Co., North Carolina, to his wife Elizabeth Grimes Ellis while he was serving in Company C of the 43rd N.C. Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters were transcribed in 1977 by Hugh Buckner Johnston who also provided supplementary information. Also included are genealogy records for the Ellis and Hill families of Eastern North Carolina.

Collection (25 November – 21 December 1862) including holograph letters written by 1st Lt. Frank W. Adams, Company B, 51st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, to his sister Elizabeth in Massachusetts, describing in great detail on the regiment's departure from the Boston Harbor aboard the Steamer Merrimac, voyage to North Carolina, their arrival in Newbern [New Bern], N.C. their encounter with the 43rd Massachusetts and their participation in the Battles of Kinston and Whitehall (present day White Hall), North Carolina as part of General John G. Foster's Goldsborough [Goldsboro] Expedition; also transcript of the holograph letters and one additional letter; also folios that formerly contained the letters and transcripts. Note: the letter dated 10-21 December 1862 also contains an envelope containing remnants of the ribbons once used to bind the letters; the folder that held the transcripts is stamped inside the font cover: "Robert W. Adams Oct. 1, 1947".

Papers of Eudora Welty (1909-1986 [Bulk: 1930-1980], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Jackson, Mississippi-born American short story writer, novelist, journalist, photographer, and educator, who wrote about the American South; including correspondence; manuscripts, original art, photographic prints, proofs of published materials, audio recordings, printed material, and loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, by or about Eudora Welty, Donald Davie, Richard Ghormley Eberhart, Shelby Foote, Ross Macdonald, Katherine Anne Porter, George William Russell, Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren, and others; in English & French language.

Personal files created by Pitt County, North Carolina, native Mary Perkins-Williams relate to the Pitt County Black Assembly (1979, 1983), NAACP Legal Defense (1980), regional development (1977-1979), minority issues, and fair housing. The Rich Elkins Papers (1994-2002) is a collection of publications and clippings on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender communities in North Carolina, South Carolina, and New York with some of the materials from the LGBT community in Greenville, N.C. located in Eastern North Carolina. Richard "Rich" Elkins has been active in the Eastern N.C. LGBT community for many years and these materials reflect his involvement.

Vaughan Family Papers (1872-1900, 1969, undated) includes photograph albums containing images of family members from Hertford County, North Carolina. Also included is Uriah Vaughan correspondence (1876-1887) and a photocopy of the 1969 appraisal of Uriah Vaughan Heirs Property in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.
