Papers of ECU professor and writer Vernon A. Ward, Jr. containing his published works, literary manuscripts, poetry drafts, correspondence, clippings, memorabilla, and photos.

Letters and ephemera (1926-1929) related to the life of Agnes Wadlington [Barrett], who was born in Trigg County, Kentucky in 1902, before she took a job at East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) as secretary to the president of the college. Also found with these papers are many photographs of members of the Putnam family of Murray, Kentucky. The only connection between Mrs. Barrett and the Putnam family appears to be that both she and Louise Vey Putnam Carter's husband Herbert Leland Carter both worked at East Carolina University. An 1982 engagement calendar kept by Mrs. Barrett documents her life during retirement in Greenville, North Carolina.

Papers of Carson McCullers (1941-1985 [Bulk: 1941-1945]) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Columbia, Georgia-born American author of Southern Gothic novels and short stories, consisting of her correspondence with noted American composer David Diamond (1915-2005), 1941-1945, and a letter from McCullers' biographer, Virginia Spencer Carr, to Stuart Wright, regarding publication of the McCullers – Diamond correspondence, 1985.

Papers of William Faulkner (1948-1990) documenting the life and literary career of the noted New Albany, Mississippi-born American novelist and short story writer who won the 1949 Nobel Prize for literature; consisting of loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, including a letter enclosing a printed copy of Faulkner's Nobel Prize acceptance speech and letters from Faulkner's biographer, Joseph Blotner; also a carbon typescript manuscript (ca. 1948) of a Faulkner short story entitled A Courtship.

This collection contains the Secret World War II Historical Narrative of District Operations Office and Inshore Patrol, Fifth Naval District, Norfolk, Virginia (August 31, 1945) Approved by R. S. [Russell Sydnor] Crenshaw, Captain, U.S.N. Assistant Commandant of the Fifth Naval District and commander of the Inshore Patrol during most of World War II.

Papers of George Garrett (1930-2009 [Bulk: 1960-2009], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Orlando, Florida-born American poet and novelist, consisting of audio recordings, correspondence, manuscripts of poems by, about, or relating to George Garrett, Madison Smartt Bell, Carolyn Chute, Larry McMurtry, Ned O'Gorman, Henry S. Taylor & others; also including notes, oversized materials, photographic prints, printed forms, proofs of published works, loose manuscript materials transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, & printed materials; in English & French language.

Material documenting the life of WWII U.S. Navy Captain Victor Delano including accounts (1941-1986) of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and duty in the USS West Virginia, by Victor Delano, Pearl Harbor artifacts, correspondence, Familygrams, ships logs, research studies, photograph albums, loose photographs, certificates, diplomas, medals and ribbons, clippings, programs, and publications. Also includes two packets of drawings of Admiral Horatio Nelson's flagship, H.M.S. VICTORY, 1970; and an article, entitled "TOP SECRET COMPHIBPAC OPERATIONS PLAN A11-45: The Story of the Invasion of Japan" by James Martin, ca. 1986.

This collection contains material (1818-1976) belonging to Emily Louise Loftin (May 10, 1898-December 20, 1985) of Carteret County, North Carolina. She was an educator, librarian, and historian. Included are correspondence, land records, legal records, receipts, wills, and estate records related to the Laughinghouse and Pugh families of Pitt County, N.C., the related Bright and Loftin families of Lenoir County, N.C., and the Pipkin family of Wayne County, N.C. This material was transferred from the Emily Loftin Collection at the History Museum of Carteret County, N.C. Material related to Carteret County remains at the History Museum of Carteret County.

Collection (2001–2002) of materials concerning the American destroyer USS Emmons (DD-457/DMS-22), which was the last American naval fighting ship to be commissioned prior to U.S. entry in World War II, and which sank on 5 April 1945, after being badly damaged by Japanese kamikaze attacks to the north of Okinawa. Compiled by a veterans' association, the collection includes a membership roster, historical clippings, photocopies of the association's newsletters, videotape cassettes, including 1 documenting the rediscovery of the ship's resting place, on 19 February 2001, and 2 videotapes by Japanese television network, NNN, broadcast on 1 July 2001.

H. Lawrence, Merriam Golden, Stephen Spender, and others; also including printed materials.

Papers (1930-1943 undated) consisting of correspondence, bills, petitions, speeches, reports, etc., relating to legislative career, gasoline tax, fishing laws, legislative bills, creation of state motor vehicles department, and reports of NC Agricultural Extension service.
