D. These papers document his literary career in the fields of Naval History and mid-nineteenth century American South. His books include High Seas Confederate (about John Newland Maffitt), John Taylor Wood: Sea Ghost of the Confederacy, and Richard Peters: Champion of the New South; he also contributed to William N. Still's book The Confederate Navy. A native of Stantonsburg, North Carolina, Shingleton has done genealogical work relative to the Shingleton family that is also found in this collection.
