Collection (ca. 1936-1997) relates to the life and career of Arthur Greenville McIntyre; an Lieutenant Commander of the United States Navy who was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate (Class of 1941) and who served in the Pacific theater of World War II. McIntyre served on the submarine U.S.S. Grenadier until it was lost in April 1943 by Japanese bombing. As a result of the attack, he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese and was not released until September of 1945. The bulk of the collection is on McIntyre's naval career but there is also material containing his biographical information and information on his time as a prisoner of war. Of particular interest are documents that have information on the Japanese who ran the POW camps and who were tried in the war crimes trials that were held in Japan. The documents lists their names and the sentences they received as a result of those trials. The majority of the documents in the collection are in English but some are in Japanese and Spanish with no translation.

Papers (1945-1949 [Bulk 1945]) consisting of black & white photographic prints taken by U.S. Army Master Sergeant Alvis Whitted Mewborn in France, Germany, and Austria, during his service in the 131st Evacuation Hospital, 11th Armored Division, U.S. Third Army, during World War II, featuring photographs of Mauthausen Concentration Camp & Camp Gusen #1, near Mauthausen, Austria, where the Germans held mainly Italian but also Russian and Serbian prisoners of war about 9,000 of whom died in the camp; including views of the prisoners, alive and dead, the underground Messerschmitt factory, the quarry, the railroad siding, the camp cemetery and camp chapel built by the Americans after they liberated the camp; care and treatment of the survivors, etc.; Palais de Chaillot, in Paris, France; Ulm Cathedral in Ulm, Germany; St. Florian's Monastery near Enns, Austria; also views of homes belonging to Hermann Goering and Adolf Hitler at Berchtesgaden, Germany; street scenes and the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France; and post-war Mewborn family and fishing scenes in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

Papers (1926-1953) of Brig. General Paul A. Putnam, U. S. Marine Corps, an aviator, who was captured at Wake Island and was a POW in Japan, 1941-1945, consisting of correspondence, diaries, a photograph, clippings, citations, orders, recipe book, copies of awards, citations, publications, newspaper articles.

Papers (1903-1951) including correspondence, photographs, negatives, pamphlets, letters form of radio shows, reading, social events and miscellaneous.

Papers (1926-2003) covering the schooling and naval service of U. S. naval officer, USNA class of 1931, Captain James H. Brown, including correspondence, reports, publications, clippings, and photographs. Extensive material pertains to his service during World War II aboard the USS SHAW (1940-1942), USS ABNER READ (1942-1944), and the USS AMMEN (1944-1945), as well as his service before and after World War II.

Collection (1855-1958) of manuscript and printed materials compiled by Antoinette S. Jenkins, including a history of St. Peter's Church, Salem, Massachusetts, 1958; notebook containing records of the botanical research conducted by Hugh M. Neisler of Taylor, Georgia, 1866-1881; photocopy typescript account of the 45th Georgia Infantry Regiment (C.S.A.) during Civil War battles at Richmond, Cedar Run, 2nd Manassas, Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown, and others, by Joseph A. Papers (1920-1967, undated) of a North Carolina lawyer and politician consisting of clippings, pamphlets, speeches, announcement of a law partnership, report entitled "A Ten-Year Plan for North Carolina," letters, articles from magazines, ephemera and photographs.

The collection includes photographs, correspondence, booklets, and other mixed materials from Dr. Andrew Best's military service, medical career, civic work, and personal life.

Photograph album documenting the travels (1951) of the USS Seiverling through stops in Pearl Harbor, Midway, Japan, and probably Hong Kong, participation in the Taiwan Strait Patrol, and bombardments near Songjin, North Korea. Photographs depict not only the activities of the sailors, but also activities of the local people. Also included are photographs of other U.S. Navy ships, and small boats carrying surrendering North Koreans.

Private journals/ships' logs (October 1860 - July 1878) of Benjamin Thompson, master of the brigs Progressive Age and T. A. Darrell, and the ships Sportsman, and Harrisburg (v. 1, 1860-1865), commander of the ship Columbia (v. 2, 1865-1870), master of the ship Peruvian (v. 3, 1870-1872), and captain of the clipper ship Great Admiral (v. 4, 1874-1878), illustrating his career aboard sailing ships trading between England, the east and west coasts of America, Southeast Asia (Singapore, Manila, and Hong Kong), and Tokyo, Japan, including highly detailed and dramatic accounts of shipboard life and commercial operations.

Papers (1922-1975) of U.S. Navy officer, USNA Class of 1938, including photograph albums, correspondence, speeches, clippings, reports and photographs.

The Ormond Family Papers (ca. 1770-1925) include correspondence, land grants, financial records, school notes taken at Trinity College, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and photographs pertaining to the Ormond and Turnage families of Dobbs, Greene and Pitt Counties, North Carolina. Considerable material pertains to State Senator Yancey T. Ormond of Greene County.
