Papers of Barry Hannah (1960-2016 [Bulk: 1972-2016], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Meridian, Mississippi-born, novelist and educator at the University of Mississippi, where he directed the Masters of Fine Arts program; consisting of correspondence, manuscripts, photographic materials, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, proofs of published materials, & printed broadsides of his poem Boomerang and other works.

Reproduced prints of photographs originally taken by J. Thomas Forrest between 1965-1988 documenting Greenville, North Carolina. Featured are aerial and ground-level views of Greenville's central business district, including construction undertaken by the Greenville Redevelopment Commission; Old Austin Building at East Carolina University; and aspects of the operation of the Daily Reflector.

Papers (1902-1980s, undated) of Greenville, NC, lawyer and member (1956-1961) of the N.C. House of Representatives and Greenville Mayor (1969-1971) Frank Marion Wooten, Jr. (1916-1992) consisting of correspondence, pamphlets, proposed bills, reports, petitions, resolutions, bulletins, periodicals, printed bills, and photographs. Crime and punishment-related topics, and tax issues are major topics covered.

Collection (1766-2010) consists of items related to the Augustus Moore (June 8, 1803-March 23, 1851) family of Chowan and Halifax Cos., N.C., his children Augustus Minton Moore, William Armistead Moore, Henrietta Moore Sutton, Susan Augustus Moore Righton, Mary Elizabeth Moore, Alfred Moore and John Armistead Moore, and the descendants of John Armistead Moore. Included are account books, legal records, land transactions, estate records, correspondence, clippings, and autograph books (1855, 1865) belonging to family members who attended Miss Willard's Female Seminary in Troy, N.Y., and Patapsco Female Institute in Ellicott City, Maryland. Also included are identified photographs (cartes de visite, tintypes, cased pictures, albums) of the Moore, Gilliam, and Skinner, families, religious books such as Roman Catholic Missals, Episcopal Books of Common Prayer and Bibles, UNC-Chapel Hill diplomas (1824), and items related to the 1878 Exposition in Paris, France.

Papers (1933-1988, undated) documenting the life and literary career of Katherine Anne Porter (1890-1980), the noted Indian Creek, Texas-born American short story writer and novelist, including correspondence; also original art, photographic prints, printed material and loose manuscripts transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection pertaining to Robert Penn Warren, Robert Lowell, Richard Ghormley Eberhart, William H. Littlefield, and others.

Thomas Mann was born in 1718 in Hertford County, NC. He owned almost 4,000 acres of land in Edgecombe County at the time of his death in 1792. The collection spans 1745, 1752, and 1910 including a land grant to Thomas Mann from George II, a plat map of a servey of Nann's property, State Fair entry flags, and various fragmented documents. The strength of the collection is Thomas Mann's legacy.

This collection contains items that document community college administrator Jerome Worsley's life as a student at East Carolina Teachers College (now ECU) in the mid-1940s and as a member of the U.S. Army (1951-1953). Included are photographs, clippings and a certificate related to Mr. Worsley's participation in the Chi Pi Players at East Carolina Teachers College; photographs, documents, passport, dog tag, patches, and insignia concerning his service as office manager in Paris, France, for SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. SHAPE is the military unit of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

These oral history interviews were conducted by Donald Y. Leggett in June 2020 as his final project of employment in the Chancellor's Office. They center around people's impressions of how East Carolina has filled underdog and alpha dog roles over time.
