Benjamin Holt Ticknor Papers

Papers (1862-1914) concern the life of Benjamin Holt Ticknor (1842-1914) of Boston, Massachusetts, after he enlisted in the 45th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Co. G, in 1862 during the Civil War. Included are thirteen letters written to his father during the war with nine (November 1863-March 1864) of them written from Fort Totten in New Bern, N.C. Several documents relate to a court martial and trial he participated in; other documents relate to his postwar involvement in the Loyal Legion and genealogy research. Also included are photographs of his funeral procession. Transferred (not purchased) from Denning House Antiquarian Books & Manuscripts.

Bogart Family Papers

Collection includes a letter written by Ann Elizabeth Bogart, Washington, N.C., to "My dear Aunt," January 8, 1865, describing wartime conditions in Washington, N.C., and vicinity, a 2-page partial transcription of the letter, a tintype of a woman (possibly Ann Elizabeth Bogart), and two color images of the gravestone for Ann Bogart and the plot where she is buried in Washington, N.C. Also included are research materials concerning David Nevius Bogart of Washington, N.C., and related to the Bogart, Biggs, O'Cain, Lucas, Bonner, Peyton, and Snoad families of Beaufort County, N.C. Photographs, genealogy notes, Bible records, and correspondence relate to the Smallwood, Williams, and Hassell families of Williamston, N.C. Letters related to brothers Will and Bruce Smallwood discuss Will's travels and death (1918) in Alaska and Bruce's life and death (after 1894) in Mexico.

Charles O'Hagan Laughinghouse Papers

Papers (1865-1954, undated) consisting of correspondence, speeches, financial and legal records, a minute book, a guest register, photographs, newspapers, genealogical notes, deeds, etc., related to the career of Dr. Charles O'Hagan Laughinghouse (1871-1930) of Greenville, N.C., and to the Laughinghouse and related Stokes families. Besides having a successful practice in Greenville, Dr. Laughinghouse was a respected member of the North Carolina State Board of Health for several years beginning in 1911, served as president of the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina in 1916 and 1917, and served as State Health Officer from 1926 until his death in 1930.

William and Harry Whittaker Papers

William and Harry Whittaker were brothers who both served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. William mainly served in West Germany while Harry was sent to Vietnam in 1967. Their letters to each other cover the years 1964 to 1968 and discuss both basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and their service in West Germany and Vietnam. Also included are numerous photographs taken by Harry while he was stationed in Vietnam.
