This collection (c. 1880-2001) contains the papers of three generations of U.S. Navy officers whose service covered the years 1891 through 1963. Correspondence, orders, reports, photographs, certificates, publications, a diary, ships histories, clippings and reminiscences document their careers and that of Waldron McLellon's uncle who served in the U.S. Navy from 1934 through 1952. Waldron M. McLellon graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1941 and copious material relates to the lives of the USNA Class of 1941 members through 2001. Other papers concern the genealogy of Waldron McLellon's family.

Papers of Fred Chappell (1952-2017, undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Canton, North Carolina-born American educator, short story writer, novelist, and educator, whose writing focus on Southern themes, consisting of correspondence, holographs, typescripts, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, photographic prints, proofs of published works, audio recordings, printed materials & oversized materials; also including Chappell's correspondence with George Garrett, Stuart Wright and Wallace Fowlie, a clipping and a print of his poem The Collector (2011) written in honor of Stuart Wright, and a painting by Fritz Janschka.

Collection (1930s-1970s) of North Carolina Ferries manuals such as "Specifications, Pamlico Sound Ferry, Virginia Dare," "NC State Ferry Operations;" also a NC State Highway Commission manual; also NC State Ferries and NC Board of Transportation forms; and NC State Highway Commission ferry boat plans and contract plans. Papers (1780-1969; bulk 1808-1924) including correspondence, land records, legal papers, financial papers, ledgers, etc., of two prominent Eastern North Carolina families--Grimes and Bryan--related through marriage. Other material concerns the Wharton and Conrad families of Clemmonsville, North Carolina, in Davidson County, who are also related by marriage to the Grimes family.

Diaries, journals and letters (1897-1906, 1986-1988) of Mormon missionaries in Eastern North Carolina (1897-1906), including William A. Adams, 1900-1902, James Godfrey, 1899-1901, William M. Hansen, 1897-1898, William R. Hobbs, 1901-1903, Lewis Johnson, 1903-1905, William A. Petty, 1905-1906, and James Taylor, 1900-1902, along with Memoirs, Notes, clippings, anecdotes and other materials compiled by Joel Grant Handcock, for use in the book Strengthened by the Storm.

This collection consists of the records of the Institute of Outdoor Theatre which was founded in 1963 and includes material related to over 600 outdoor theatres, some of which began operation in the 1920s. Included are play scripts, correspondence, clippings, publicity material, video and audio recordings, feasibility studies, publications, reel-to-reel tapes, 35 mm slides, blueprints, and audition-related materials. This collection is being processed with the support of a National Historical Publications and Records Commission grant.

Material includes annual reports, data sheets, programs, sound recordings, publications, and correspondence related to the operation of the School of Music.

Papers of John Crowe Ransom (1904-2000, undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Pulaski, Tennessee-born American editor, poet, literary critic, and educator, including correspondence, manuscripts, photographic prints, proofs of published materials, printed material, audio recordings, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection and oversized materials, by or about W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, T. S. Eliot, Robert Penn Warren, Richard Ghormley Eberhart, Randall Jarrell, Katherine Anne Porter, William Styron, Allen Tate, Peter Hillsman Taylor, and others, in English and French language.

Papers (1907-1968) documenting the U.S. Naval career (1910-1946) of Admiral Jules James consisting of correspondence of Naval travels, logbook, diaries, newspapers clippings, radio press news.

Papers (1791-1945) of steamboat operator on the Cape Fear and Black Rivers, based in Point Caswell, NC, consisting of correspondence, genealogical material, wills, indentures, marriage certificate, receipts, inventories, exposition programs, photographs, newspaper clippings, letters and miscellaneous.

Papers (1766-1869) consisting of correspondence, legal papers, land records, financial papers, reports, newspapers, and miscellaneous items.

Papers (1926-2003) covering the schooling and naval service of U. S. naval officer, USNA class of 1931, Captain James H. Brown, including correspondence, reports, publications, clippings, and photographs. Extensive material pertains to his service during World War II aboard the USS SHAW (1940-1942), USS ABNER READ (1942-1944), and the USS AMMEN (1944-1945), as well as his service before and after World War II.

Papers of John Ciardi (1820-1991 [Bulk: 1947-1991], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Boston, Massachusetts-born American poet, translator, etymologist, and editor, consisting of correspondence, manuscript materials, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, proofs of published works, audio recordings, and printed materials, by or about John Ciardi, Elio Vittorini, Harry Crews, George Braziller, and others; in English, Italian & Latin language.

This collection (1791-1960) documents the horse and mule business, farm operations, land transactions, saw mill operation, and other business enterprises of Edward Cyrus Winslow (b. 1886) of Tarboro, Edgecombe County, N.C. Included in the collection are correspondence, financial and legal records such as account books, ledgers, bills and receipts, contracts with other mule dealers, promissory notes, agricultural liens and chattel mortgages, deeds, and lease and rental agreements. Also included are superior court records, blueprints of farm tracts and dairy equipment, printed material, business and family photographs, and a small quantity of family correspondence.
