The Vertical File contains brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, and other printed ephemeral material pertaining to North Carolina people, organizations, places, history, and events. Files on a county, for example, typically include brochures / maps pertaining to natural or historic sites, cultural events, and local businesses.

Lang, Jr. He served as president of the National Student Federation of America (1933-1935), Assistant Director of Education Programs, Civilian Conservation Corps (1935-1938), director of the N.C. National Youth Administration (1938-1942), and administrative assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force (1964-1971) among other positions.

Papers (1976-2011) of Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Executive Director of the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund and lobbyist for Conservation Council of North Carolina and the Sierra Club, North Carolina Chapter, including correspondence, newsletters, pamphlets, handbooks, magazines, legislative summaries, memos, reports, newspaper clippings on microfilm and miscellaneous documents relating to environmental issues.

This collection consists of materials (1911-1991) related to Judge Walter L. Small of Elizabeth City, N.C., and his family, especially his sons Admiral Walter L. Small, Jr., Judge J. Herbert White Small, and Charles Buxton Small plus relatives in the White family. Included are photograph albums; scrapbooks relating to local, state, and national events and to WWII; a memory and fellowship book kept by Elizabeth Peele White while attending St. Mary's School (1911-1913); ledgers including one (1919-1937) kept by Elizabeth City dentist Dr. John Herbert White; and certificates.

Papers of Mark Harris [Finkelstein] (1976) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Mount Vernon, New York-born American journalist, novelist, and literary biographer who was also a creative writing educator at San Francisco State University, Arizona State University and several other universities; consisting of a bound, uncorrected, galley proof of his autobiography, entitled Best Father Ever Invented: The Autobiography of Mark Harris (1976).

Thomas Mann was born in 1718 in Hertford County, NC. He owned almost 4,000 acres of land in Edgecombe County at the time of his death in 1792. The collection spans 1745, 1752, and 1910 including a land grant to Thomas Mann from George II, a plat map of a servey of Nann's property, State Fair entry flags, and various fragmented documents. The strength of the collection is Thomas Mann's legacy.
