The Special Collections teaching collection consists of sources used for archival classroom instruction. Material within the collection was identified as out of scope for our regular collections, yet still useful as a primary or secondary source in our teaching sessions.

Collection (ca. 1876-1942) of manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials relating to Vice Admiral Niblack (1858-1929) and his family, especially his naval, engineering, and scientific careers. Included are his work with the Smithsonian Institution; services in the USS ALABAMA, USS BOSTON, USS CASTINE, USS CHICAGO, USS COSMOS, USS IROQUOIS, USS LACKAWANNA, USS MICHIGAN, USS PATTERSON, USS PITTSBURGH, USS TACOMA, USS UTAH, and the USS WINSLOW; as Director of Naval Intelligence, 1919-1920; and his services ((beginning in 1896) as naval attaché to the U. S. Embassies at Berlin and Rome and to the U. S. Legation at Vienna. Topics covered include combat at the Battle of Manila (1898) during the Spanish American War, involvement of the USS BOSTON in the Battle of Iloilo (1899) in the Philippine Islands during the Philippine-American War, the Occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico, 1914, and during and after World War I, 1917-1919, 1921-1922. Other materials relate to the naming and launching (1937-1942) of the USS NIBLACK.

This collection consists of the records (1938-2014) of the Betsy Dowdy Chapter (Elizabeth City, North Carolina) of the DAR. Included are thirty-nine scrapbooks (1939-2012), fourteen Constitution Week scrapbooks (1979-2008), minutes (1938-2009), executive board minutes (1988-2010), award certificates (1970s-2014), treasurers' reports and other financial records (1992-2011), publications (1938-1958), and loose items (1940s-2000s). The scrapbooks contain photographs, clippings, programs, minutes, brochures, and circulars reflecting the activities of the Betsy Dowdy Chapter.

Records 1956-1968) of Greenville, NC garden club, including 3 volumes of scrapbook materials (loose-leaf), 1956-68; 1 volume of yearbook materials (loose-leaf), including constitution, officers, calendar of events, membership, committee, projects, 1962-68; 1 volume of text (mss typescript) and color photographs entitled "Ward 3) Description of Beautification Project," [1960-65]; and 1 volume of records (loose-leaf), including membership, minutes of meetings (1956-68), executive board membership and executive board minutes of meetings (1956-66).

Papers of the Historic Halifax Garden Association include official documents (1975-1999) such as the constitution and by-laws, papers regarding tax-exempt status and a photocopy of the check handing over the remaining assets of the association to the Historical Halifax Restoration Association; two secretarial notebooks (1981-1989); a guestbook used at the opening of the Restored Eagle Tavern in Historic Halifax (June 29, 1981) and records belonging to past president Gwen B. Dickens (1975, 1979-1989) such as orders of business, attendance records, membership dues records, correspondence and material related to projects.

Collection includes negatives from U. S. Coast Guard Cutter KANKAKEE files (ca. 1921), showing the stern wheel paddle steamer S. J. PHILLIPS, of New Bern, North Carolina, and two sailing vessels, CONSTITUTION of Manteo, NC, and the ETNER, of New Bern, NC. Also included are photographs and 1 negative of the tanker OVERSEAS CHICAGO (1977), the Merchant Marine ship PENN CHAMPION at Bethlehem-Sparrows Point Shipyard (1969), the cargo ship SS SANTA MERCEDES (1964) and the Greek cruise ship OLYMPIA.

Papers (undated, 1935-2000) of New Bern, NC public figure, Mutual Life Insurance Company executive, including speeches, radio talks, biographical and historical information.

Collection (1898, 1908-2009) consists of research materials related to the history of Edenton and the Albemarle-Chowan region of North Carolina. Elizabeth Vann Moore (1912-2010) of Edenton spent her life researching local and family history topics. Her notebooks and correspondence reflect her involvement in writing Historic Edenton Guidebooks, the 300 year history of St. Paul's Parish in Edenton, a North Carolina Historical Review article on John Mare, and extensive information about the Edenton Tea Party, as well as work with the Edenton Historical Commission and the North Caroliniana Society. Also included are personal items such as her poetry, diplomas, plaques, and DVDs of interviews with Miss Moore done in 2007 by Martha Daniels.

Papers of Donald Davidson (1981, 1986) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Giles County, Tennessee-born American poet, essayist, social and literary critic and author; consisting of a printed broadside of his poem An Epinician Ode in Honor of John Crowe Ransom, published by Palaemon Press (1981); noted by Stuart Wright on verso: typescript is signed by Donald Davidson 'At Bread Loaf, Vermont / July 28, 1958; also including a letter from M. Thomas Inge to Stuart Wright (1986) concerning the possible publication of Inge's correspondence with Davidson.

The War Diaries of the USS Nevada, 1916–1946 (undated)

Records (1973-2015) of the North American Society for Oceanic History (NASOH) including correspondence, membership lists, annual conference materials, book awards, bibliographies, newsletters, treasurer's records, programs, and publications.

Lecture notes, business accounts, newspaper articles, military papers, and artifacts of the Garrenton Family. The Garrentons include: James Francis Garrenton (1839-1913), Cecil (1883-1935), and Connell (1910-1985). They established the Bethel Clinic near Greenville, North Carolina.

This collection contains the administrative records for the East Carolina African and African American Studies Program. Record types include annual reports, committee meeting minutes, curriculum and course proposals, correspondence, promotional materials for related programs and events, press releases, and newspaper clippings.

Letters written by Victor C. Faure to his parents dated from May 18, 1918 to 27 March, 1919. Describe movement from California to Fort Mills on Long Island, to France, and delays in returning home after the war.
