Elmore--Croom Family Photographs of Eastern North Carolina

This collection contains photographs (mostly snapshots, also tintypes, studio portraits, and 2 photograph albums) mainly related to the Croom and Smith families of Lenoir County and the Elmore and Rouse families of Lenoir and Wayne Cos., North Carolina. Also included are images for people in related families of eastern North Carolina and the Cole, Meeks, Rouse, Infinger, Vallotton, and Thompson families in Georgia. Most images are identified.

Bruce Wilson Crabtree Memoir

Memoir "Precious Memories. . .in My Life" by Wilson Crabtree (2006) about life experienced by the Crabtree and Oakley families in Rougemont, North Carolina, in Durham, Person, and Orange counties during the first half of the 20th Century. Family history and scanned photographs for the two families are given as well as documenting life in small diversified farms with tobacco as the cash crop. Accompanying the memoir is Mr. Crabtree's obituary.

Millie and Christine McCoy Collection

Circa 1900 cabinet photograph and circa 1870 carte de visite of Millie and Christine McCoy, Black conjoined twins enslaved, in Columbus County, North Carolina (1851-1912). Cabinet photograph was taken by Frank Wendt, Boonton, New Jersey, and is autographed on verso "Millie-Christine". Also included is a signed autographed letter and two locks of hair said to belong to Millie and Christine McCoy.

Penelope B. Rodman Papers

This collection contains twenty-four pages of genealogical notes related to Beaufort County, N.C., families including Bonner, Snoad, Smallwood, and Latham written by Lucretia Hughes of Washington, N.C.; and a scrapbook of "About Town" columns (1946-1947) written by Penelope Bogart (Rodman) as a teenager for the Washington Daily News published in Washington, N.C. Also included are two typescripts of interviews done in 1938 with a mill worker at Glen Raven Cotton Mill in Burlington, N.C., and with a woman who ran a lodging house in Raleigh, N.C.; and an undated typescript titled "Description of Mill Village" about life on Factory Hill where many of the Asheville Cotton Mill workers lived. The interview with the woman in Raleigh also includes her experiences during the Civil War in Wake County, N.C. In addition, there is an errata of corrections to Van Camp's Images of America: Washington, North Carolina and a Bible containing family history information.

Elias Carr Papers

Papers (1805-1968; bulk 1860-1916) consisting of correspondence of a political nature, family-related correspondence, speeches, financial papers, farm records, farm account books, clippings, photographs, a diary and printed material related to Elias Carr and other members of the Carr and related families. Elias Carr (1839-1900) of Edgecombe County, a member of the Democratic Party, was the governor of North Carolina (1893-1897) and president of the N.C. State Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union (1889-1892).

Carl Whittlesey, 313 Engineers, 88th Div., WWI Diary

This candid and detailed World War I diary (April 25, 1918-March 12, 1919) was kept by Carl Whittlesey of Barton County, MO, during his service with the 313 Engineers 88th Division. He kept detailed entries regarding his training at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa, his participation in the Alsace Campaign in France, and his involvement in developing the war ravaged areas in Europe.
