This collection (1942-1999) contains papers related to the World War II service of Lt. Commander Godfrey Cheshire, Jr., in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Harold C. Thomas (DE-21) for which he was the commander for a year. Included are photocopies of the ship's logs for the USS Harold C. Thomas, correspondence (1990-1992) with the Destroyer Escort Commanding Officers Association about reunions, Cheshire's military records (1942-1945, 1947), photocopies of clippings and articles about the Thomas and other DEs, photocopies of certificates, photographs, and DVDs containing oral history interviews of Cheshire by family members.

Papers (1863, 1946-1967) including correspondence, speeches, news releases, pamphlets, etc. relating to a local leader in the Ku Klux Klan in Eastern North Carolina.

Papers of Irwin Shaw (1970) documenting the life and literary career of the prolific New York City-born American playwright, screenwriter, short story writer and popular novelist; consisting of uncorrected spiral bound proofs of parts one and two of Rich Man, Poor Man, Shaw's most popular novel, which became the source for the first television miniseries.

William and Harry Whittaker were brothers who both served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. William mainly served in West Germany while Harry was sent to Vietnam in 1967. Their letters to each other cover the years 1964 to 1968 and discuss both basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and their service in West Germany and Vietnam. Also included are numerous photographs taken by Harry while he was stationed in Vietnam.

A Sketch of Naval Life (1856-1865) by John A. Grier and "The Escambia Scrapbook" detailing the experiences of the crew of the USS Escambia (AO-80) (1943-1946).

Correspondence of Minnie Tapscott with public officials and newspaper editors, newspaper and magazine articles, legal documents, reports, maps and publications related to the development of the North Carolina Global Transpark (GTP) in Kinston, North Carolina, over the years 1992 to 2001.

Papers (1939-1943) include correspondence from a U.S. naval officer describing life on the minesweeper USS YMS-62 (1942-1943) during World War II while stationed in New Orleans and Burwood in Louisiana, at sea, and in Algeria. Lieutenant Commander Brown also records his impressions of Algeria in these letters.
