Robert Morgan Papers
#0268Papers, 1861-2011 (bulk 1940-1992), undated, of Senator Robert Burren Morgan, an ECU alumnus and lawyer, who served the state of North Carolina in a variety of elected and appointed positions. His first elected position was clerk of court in Harnett County. He was elected to the State Senate, served as president pro tempore of the Senate, and was twice elected Attorney General of North Carolina. He served in this position until 1974, when he won the United States Senate seat vacated by Senator Samuel James "Sam" Ervin, Jr. Morgan served as United States Senator from 1975 to 1981. He returned to his law practice following an unsuccessful reelection campaign and later served as Director of the State Bureau of Investigation from 1985 until 1992. Morgan served as a member of the ECU Board of Trustees for fifteen years, including nine terms as chair in the 1960s. He helped the institution achieve university status and was instrumental in establishing the ECU School of Medicine. The collection includes series relating to Morgan's family and personal matters, North Carolina Senate Files, Attorney General Files, United States Senate Files, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Files, and Oversized Materials Files. It includes manuscripts, photographs, audio and video materials, electronic records, printed materials, and ephemera.

#1196Papers (April 1942 – April 1943, undated) consisting mainly of photographic prints originally belonging to a photograph album compiled by David Y. Taylor, documenting progress on several troubled U.S. Navy construction project contracts to build shipyards and ship repair facilities in the vicinity of Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia; including contracts awarded to Charleston Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, the Clifford F. MacEvoy Company, the Savannah Machine & Foundry Company, and to its Shipbuilding Division; including projects to construct plant facilities, dry docks and floating dry docks, caissons, retaining walls, coffer dams, graving docks, piers, wharfs, pilings, and bulkheads, etc.; the photographs also show work crews, including racially integrated crews, and equipment, including: railroads, docks, buildings, trucks, cranes, and pile drivers; also including the leather-bound front cover of the original photograph album.
This collection contains Bible Records (from 1891 Bible) for the Daniel S. It was published as part of his "A New General Atlas, Comprising a Complete Set of Maps, representing the Grand Divisions of the Globe, Together with the several Empires, Kingdoms and States in the World; Compiled from the Best Authorities, and corrected by the Most Recent Discoveries," Philadelphia, 1824, and engraved by Young and Delleker.
This collection contains Mary Stephenson Hammel's items from her time as a student at East Carolina which are her diploma, publication award for her work on the yearbook, and letter patch for her participation in the Women's Athletic Association. Additionally, there is a 2005 photograph of Mary and a copy of the Alumni Association's booklet made for the class of 1955's Golden Alumni event.
Correspondence (1861-1864) of Edgecombe County, N.C., soldier in Company F of the 30th Regiment of North Carolina Troops stationed in various locations in Virginia. All of his letters are addressed to his future wife, Miss Elizabeth S. Ward of Rocky Mount Depot, N.C. Two other letters are from North Carolina soldiers related to Miss Ward.
Collection (12 February 1864) consisting of a letter from Pvt. James Addison Lowrie, Company D of the 57th North Carolina Infantry, at Kinston, NC, to his brother Robert [of Brunswick County, NC], reporting on his good health, the poor mail service, the lack of news, the growing dissatisfaction among "the boys", the recent desertion of 14 men from the 21st Regiment North Carolina Infantry, and the Kinston Hangings, the hanging, on 12 February 1864, of five men who had deserted the Confederate Army and been recaptured: Amos Amyett, Mitchell Busick, Lewis Bryan, William Irving and John Staley; after deserting, the men had joined the 2nd North Carolina Union Volunteers and been captured on 1 February 1864, at Beech Grove; also transcript of letter; also digital copy.

Photographs depicting local life and scenery such as street scenes, a Peng (tent cart), street vendors, Chinese Theatre scene, temples, Boxer ruins used as a boarding school and teachers and their students, are accompanied by ephemera such as programs, memorials and prospectuses.
Schooner Hilan Log Book
#1426This log book contains daily entries from October 29, 1816, through November 29, 1818, for the Schooner Hilan. John Hand is the Master of the schooner which sailed between eastern seaboard ports Philadelphia, Norfolk, Richmond, and Charleston. Entries cover weather, cargo listings, upkeep of the schooner, issues with crew members and passengers, and problems with the schooner related to harsh weather.
