Rep. Howard Chapin Papers (1947-2000) primarily pertaining to his nine terms in the North Carolina General Assembly from Washington, NC, 1974-1992, including personal correspondence, clippings, materials relating to his service on committees, and artifacts he received relating to the bicentennials of Washington, NC and the United States, 1975-76.

Papers of George Garrett (1930-2009 [Bulk: 1960-2009], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Orlando, Florida-born American poet and novelist, consisting of audio recordings, correspondence, manuscripts of poems by, about, or relating to George Garrett, Madison Smartt Bell, Carolyn Chute, Larry McMurtry, Ned O'Gorman, Henry S. Taylor & others; also including notes, oversized materials, photographic prints, printed forms, proofs of published works, loose manuscript materials transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, & printed materials; in English & French language.

Unpublished autobiography and personal papers of Rear Admiral Lucius W. Johnson (1882-1968), a distinguished Navy surgeon, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his relief efforts in the Dominican Republic during Dictator Rafael Trujillo's reign, coordinated construction of the National Naval Medical Center outside of Washington, D.C., oversaw the development of Naval Mobile Base Hospital No. 1 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and is credited with introducing the Daiquiri to America. Included besides the 400-page autobiography are scrapbooks detailing the planning and construction of the medical center; a report on the construction of the mobile hospital which includes photographs; three binders containing over two hundred pamphlets, off prints, and clippings of Johnson's published articles; military orders; and his official Navy portrait.

The bulk of the collection includes material related to the activities of Celina Clark Noble (1829-) and her family and includes land records, land description and surveys, promissory notes, mortgages and other legal papers, bank notes, ballads, financial papers, receipts, etc. Also included is the Civil War correspondence (1864-1865) of Corporal E. E. (Evans Everette) Noble (1829-1895) of the 67th Regiment North Carolina Infantry to his wife Susan J. Noble (1837-1873) while serving throughout Eastern North Carolina.

Scrapbook, clippings, correspondence, photographs, reports, and other materials related to the World War II career of Lt. Commander Richard Hamilton Smith aboard the USS Teak and the USS Thomas J. Gray, and especially related to the successful evacuation during 7-9 September 1945 of British, Australian and American prisoners of war held by the Japanese at Kiirun, Formosa [Taiwan].
