Papers (1830-2014, undated) [Bulk: 1895-1970] of the Humber Family, documenting the lives of Robert Lee Humber, Jr. (1898-1970) and his extended family, including the papers of his father, Robert Lee Humber, Sr. (1864-1952), a businessman and inventor and his mother, Lena Clyde Davis Humber (1870-1936) and her family, of Kinston, Greenville and Davis Island, North Carolina; his siblings, John Davis Humber, MD (1895-1991), Leslie Mumford Humber (1907-1925), and Lena Dye Humber Smith (1902-1973); also including his wife, Lucie Julie Jeanne Berthier Humber (1895-1982) and the Berthier family of Villeneuve and Paris, France, and their children and grandchildren, families, educations, careers, activities, and writings; including correspondence, files, ephemera, museum objects, published materials and oversized materials, arranged generally in alphabetical order by the donors.

This collection includes many letters written during the American Civil War by Dr. Charles James O'Hagan, an Irish immigrant who settled in Pitt County, North Carolina, and served in the North Carolina State Troops as a surgeon, to his daughters; and letters written by Confederate soldiers to his eldest daughter. Also included are letters (1840s) from family in Ireland and testamonials written to help Dr. O'Hagan find employment; letters written in the post-Civil War era 1860s through 1882; and letters, photographs, and obituaries concerning the related Laughinghouse and Grimes families of Pitt County, N.C., in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Papers (1789-1906) including correspondence, financial papers, legal records, public school registers, newspapers, promissory notes, receipts, copy of marriage and birth, etc.

Papers (1918-2005) relating to Greenville and Enfield, North Carolina boy scout leader including his World War I Diary recounting his service in the 14th Company, 4th Training Battalion, Depot Brigade and the 218th Ambulance Company in the American Expeditionary Force in France, 1918-1919, camp schedule, list of letters received and answered, addresses of French women, debts, English - French phrase, movements, places visited, and observations on daily military activities; memorials after his death; biographical sketches and clippings; letters and clippings describing him; and photographic prints of him in his World War I uniform. This collection (1846-1903) contains correspondence between Ransom Respess of Ransomville, North Carolina, and other members of his family including his son, Reverend George Respess of Ransomville, N.C. Topics include family members, agriculture, an 1860 uprising of enslaved persons in Alabama, and the Civil War Battle of Manassas (1862). Among other items included is an 1846-1849 arithmetic cipher book.

Papers (1887-1952) of Edenton, NC Judge including World War I, political, and Judicial correspondence; speeches, clippings; Nuremberg war crimes files; and Nuremberg war crimes transcripts.

Records (1955, 1960-2016) of the Pitt County Historical Society (of North Carolina), including minutes, bylaws, correspondence, and clippings, photographs, financial records, programs and photographs. Also included are the records (1949-1950) of the Greenville Music Club, the Red Banks Home Demonstration Club (1946-1950), old Greenville advertising fans, and a scrapbook for the Town and Country Senior Citizens Club (1978-1999).

Printed materials (1960-1990) received by Drs. Joseph and Lala Steelman related to the National Democratic Party and related organizations concerning social, environmental, and political issues (1969-1990). The collection also includes family files on Steelman and Edmisten families, plus large collection of familial correspondence. Records pertaining to the Steelmans' time at East Carolina are located in University Archives.

Papers (1923-[1954-1971]) of Pitt County, North Carolina, physician Karl Busbee Pace Sr.(1888-1968) who served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps (AEF) during World War I, consisting of newspaper clippings, correspondence, biographical notes, photographs, miscellany and scrapbook.

Papers (1830-1919) of a prominent New Bern, NC attorney, state representative, 1876-1880, and state senator, 1881-1883, consisting of correspondence, legal briefs, financial papers, accounts, estate papers, land book and miscellaneous.

During the Civil War, Abijah Hollis of New Hampshire served with the 45th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers as a second lieutenant in Company B under Colonel Charles R. Codman with heavy involvement in the North Carolina campaign, and in the 56th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers. This collection consists of a typescript entitled STORIES OF THE WAR, FROM PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS AND DIARIES, For My Children, A. Hollis, West Concord, N.H., January, 1884, and a transcriptrion by the donor with photographs; photocopies of official "carded medical records" for Hollis (1863-1864); copies of photographs of Hollis in uniform during the Civil War taken while stationed in New Berne (now New Bern), North Carolina, in his Union uniform with captain bars, in 1908-1910; and copies of photographs of Hollis's wife Harriette, his U.S. cartridge case, and his belt buckle used during the Civil War.
