William Davis Brackett's papers relating to his service in eastern North Carolina with E Company of the 45th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, 1862-1863.

Papers (1933-1973) of U. S. Marine Corps aviation officer (Major Gen.) who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and who retired as commander of the Cherry Point, NC Marine Air Station, including correspondence, reports, war diaries, citations, certificates, and military records. The ship's log of the US Brig Porpoise, dated 19 February 1845 to 16 June 1846, was kept during a cruise from New York to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. It details navigational statistics, weather reports, sightings and hailing of other ships, and punishments of crew infractions. The author was probably Midshipman Benjamin Lee Henderson and the log was signed in fifteen places by Lt. Commander William E. Hunt.

Items (1928-1941) related to Greenville, NC, resident James Howard Moye; and items (1955) related U.S. Coast Guard rescues in North Carolina. The Zion's Landmark Vol. 23, No. 7 and Vol. 32, No. 7 (10/15/1890 and 2/15/1899) periodical published semi-monthly by Zion's Landmark Print, Wilson, North Carolina (Primitive, or Old School Baptist) that was in the collection has since been transferred to the North Carolina Collection as of 2022.

The Ethel Clements Sherrod Collection contains personal papers of Ethel Clements Sherrod, including biographical material, correspondence, photographs, clippings, ephemera, printed items, nursing school notes, postcards, and choral music. Materials date from 1777 to 1987, with the bulk between 1920 and 1970, and document Sherrod's education, church and choir participation, family life, and community activities. Additional materials relate to members of the Sherrod family and to associates including Dr. Ralph Hardee Rives, Hazel Odell Holt, and L. R. Shepherd.

Papers (1805-1968; bulk 1860-1916) consisting of correspondence of a political nature, family-related correspondence, speeches, financial papers, farm records, farm account books, clippings, photographs, a diary and printed material related to Elias Carr and other members of the Carr and related families. Elias Carr (1839-1900) of Edgecombe County, a member of the Democratic Party, was the governor of North Carolina (1893-1897) and president of the N.C. State Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union (1889-1892).

Papers (1922-[1937]1954, undated) including business and personal correspondence, financial papers, photographs, and miscellaneous material.

Papers (1914-1988, undated) of David Balcombe, an enlisted man in the 1st Battalion, 4th Queen's West Surrey Territorial Regiment (Reserve) in India during World War I, 1914-1917; he later served as an instrument mechanic in India and Egypt in the Royal Flying Corps, 1917-1918. Consists primarily of correspondence (1914-1919) from David Balcombe to his parents in South Norwood, Surrey, England, plus clippings, ephemera, and photographs of India. Also included are letters (1928-1935) from Walter George Courtice to his sister Ruby R. Courtice, during his residency in Durban, South Africa.

Reminiscences (1999) of Capt. Walter P. Murphy, Jr. (US Navy ret.) a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1941, of his service (1941-1944) as a junior naval officer during World War II, including among other topics the incident of the submarine USS Sailfish sinking the Japanese carrier Chuyo.

Papers (1819-1872) of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a Washington, N.C., lawyer until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was commissioned a captain in the Confederate Army in 1861 and served at Fort Hatteras until he was taken prisoner by Union forces in August of that year. After the war he returned to Washington and represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly in 1870 and 1881. Papers include correspondence, military papers, prisoner of war diary kept at Fort Warren, Massachusetts, articles, essays, speeches, accounts, clippings, genealogical notes, and Sparrow family Bible records. Also included are letters (1858-1881) written by Thomas Sparrow's son George Attmore Sparrow (1845-1922) to him describing life in Okaw/Arcola, Illinois, at Hillsborough Military Academy, in military service as a Confederate soldier, and in his post-war life as a farmer and lawyer and later as a Presbyterian minister.
