Papers of George Garrett (1930-2009 [Bulk: 1960-2009], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Orlando, Florida-born American poet and novelist, consisting of audio recordings, correspondence, manuscripts of poems by, about, or relating to George Garrett, Madison Smartt Bell, Carolyn Chute, Larry McMurtry, Ned O'Gorman, Henry S. Taylor & others; also including notes, oversized materials, photographic prints, printed forms, proofs of published works, loose manuscript materials transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, & printed materials; in English & French language.

Warning: This collection contains content that may be offensive to users. Collection covers the administrative term of Leo W. Jenkins as chief executive of East Carolina University. Speeches, correspondence, and publications include East Carolina gaining University status, the foundation of a medical school, the transition of athletics into Division I, and the growth of the campus.

This collection consists of two chromolithographs produced by the Navy Records Society in 1901 depicting naval engagements of the Third Anglo Dutch War (March 27, 1672 to February 19, 1674). The prints illustrate the Battle of Solebay (May 28, 1672) and the Battle of Texel (August 21, 1673). The Battle of Solebay chromolithograph is divided into three sections, each titled to represent successive phases of the engagement and containing extensive printed inscriptions. The Battle of Texel chromolithograph is divided into seven sections, each bearing printed titles that mark specific times and stages of the battle and accompanied by printed inscriptions.

The collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, brochures, and flyers related to the creation of the Parks, Recreation, and Conservation Program at East Carolina University in the late 1960s and the work of faculty member Ralph H. Steele.

This collection contains annual reports, correspondence, administrative files, publications, photographs from the Brody School of Medicine as well as information from Vidant Health.

Papers of Mary Lee Settle (1956-1986 [Bulk: 1980-1984]) documenting the life and career of the popular Charleston, West Virginia-born American novelist, actress, and educator at Bard College, the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and the University of Virginia; consisting of loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection volumes by Settle including All the Brave Promises (1966), The Killing Ground (1980), O Beulah Land (1956), The Scapegoat (1980), and Water World (1984), containing advertising letters, a biographical sketch of Settle by George Garrett, and Settle's letters to Stuart Wright, etc.

In this oral history, Rebecca Croom Fordham (1899-1983) describes attending East Carolina Teachers Training School (East Carolina University) in Greenville, North Carolina, especially during the 1918 flu epidemic; teaching in Lenoir County, N.C.; and her life in the 1920s during the land boom and subsequent bust in Florida.

This collection contains fifty-seven ca. 1920 photographs of Greenville, North Carolina, and of East Carolina Teachers Training School (now East Carolina University). Pictured are churches, businesses, tobacco warehouses, municipal buildings, schools, residences and Training School buildings. Many buildings in these images no longer exist. The photographer is unknown.
