The collection includes correspondence, printed materials, photographs, grade reports, teaching certificates and testimonials, legal documents and newspaper clippings which document the life (1891-1975) of Lenoir County, North Carolina, school teacher Julia Catherine McDaniel including her education at Hollins Institute in Virginia and her teaching career (1912-1960) in Burlington, Bethel, and Lenoir County, N.C., schools. The collection also touches on the lives of her friends, classmates, colleagues, and students and includes materials concerning the McDaniel, Harvey, Linton and related families of Kinston and Eastern North Carolina.

Wallace Jr.'s military service during World War II, including a scrapbook documenting Wallace's service in Battery "C", 2nd Battalion, 113th Field Artillery Regiment (formerly designated 117th Field Artillery); also referred to as 113th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, North Carolina National Guard, based in Washington, N.C., including newspaper clippings, orders, photograph prints, and rosters; correspondence and newsletters pertaining to 30th Infantry Division reunions; a copy of the American Battle Monuments Commission's pamphlet entitled "30th Division: Summary of Operations in the World War" (1944); also oversized maps of the 30th Division's offensive operations during World War I, 1917-1918, removed from the pamphlet; in English, Dutch, & French language.

Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867 near Millville, Indiana and his brother Orville was born in 1871. The boys owned a bicycle shop before using their experience, tools, and equipment to experiment with flight. The collection is circa 1920 and includes a pamphlet titled Essais de Wilbur Wright, Le Mans - 1908: La Conquete de l'Air / Wilbur Wright's Trial: The Conquest of the Air. The strength of this collection is the introduction and postcards detailing Wilbur Wright and his 1908 experimental and demonstration flights in Le Mans, France.
Papers of U.S. Navy enlisted man (1863-1864) aboard the US sloop of War Powhatan, including a private log book (Nov. 1863 - Aug. 1864), correspondence, a manuscript entitled " The Attack on Charleston," and a daguerreotype of a Civil War sailor (presumably Thomas).

The collection spans 1936-1949 and includes correspondence, photographs, and a Blue Star Service Banner which would have been displayed in the front window of a home where a family member was serving in the U.S. MaryArmed Services during World War II. Mary A. McLeod and John D. Grier were married in 1948.

Joseph and Lala Steelman related to the National Democratic Party and related organizations concerning social, environmental, and political issues (1969-1990). The collection also includes family files on Steelman and Edmisten families, plus large collection of familial correspondence. Records pertaining to the Steelmans' time at East Carolina are located in University Archives.
