E. C. Winslow Records
#1174This collection (1791-1960) documents the horse and mule business, farm operations, land transactions, saw mill operation, and other business enterprises of Edward Cyrus Winslow (b. 1886) of Tarboro, Edgecombe County, N.C. Included in the collection are correspondence, financial and legal records such as account books, ledgers, bills and receipts, contracts with other mule dealers, promissory notes, agricultural liens and chattel mortgages, deeds, and lease and rental agreements. Also included are superior court records, blueprints of farm tracts and dairy equipment, printed material, business and family photographs, and a small quantity of family correspondence.

Sawyer-Harris Papers
#1280This collection consists of 48 deeds (1801-1907), legal documents and notes related to land ownership in Pitt County, North Carolina, in the area that became Ayden. The documents pertain mainly to the Harris, McGlohon/McLawhorn, and Cannon families, especially William Henry Harris, the founder of Ayden. Also included are a blueprint plat of Ayden (June 21, 1890) and copies of 2 clippings (1991-1992) about the founding of Ayden. Additional items which have been placed in the East Carolina University Archives are a 1915 yearbook for East Carolina Teachers Training School (now ECU), a 1915 folded card for the Junior-Senior Reception at ECTTS, and a calling card all belonging to ECTTS student Katherine (Kate or Katie) Eugenia Sawyer. This collection is donated by the family of John William Sawyer.
Steven N. Anastasion (U.S.N.A. 1942 graduate) served aboard the USS Champlin (DD601) from 1942 to 1945 and commanded the Destroyer Escort USS Melvin R. Nawman (DE 416) from 1952 to 1954 in Norway, Denmark and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Destroyer USS Hawkins (DDR873) from 1958 to 1960 and the Guided Missile Cruiser USS Leahy (DLG-16) from 1964 to 1967 in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Papers refer to his service aboard these ships and include printed materials, newsletters, and navigational summaries. Also included are 2009 issues of The Seaweed, published by the USS Champlin Reunion Group and a transcription of an interview with Captain Anastasion done by Robert C. Bormann of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society.

#1136Collection (ca. 1899-2011, undated) documenting the history of Pepsi-Cola in New Bern, N.C.; the involvement of the Minges family in the soft drink business, 1923-1992, in Greenville, Tarboro, and Rocky Mount, N.C.; and the Minges Bottling Group, Inc., of Ayden, N.C. Materials include clippings, correspondence, contracts and financial records, advertising materials, photographic prints and compact discs, printing plates, printed materials, trademark registration certificates, video recordings, ephemera,etc. Digital files document the history of the Minges family of Catawba and Pitt Counties, North Carolina, and the history of the Minges Bottling Group.
Collection (1936-1985, undated) of programs (the majority published by Playbill), librettos and souvenir pamphlets documenting plays, theatrical dance and musical productions performed in New York City and Stockholm. The publications are printed in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish languages.
The papers track the history and development of Pitt County Memorial Hospital(previously Vidant, now ECU Health) and Brody School of Medicine, including scrapbooks, photographs, publications, and videos.
Leslie Avery Shaw Papers
#0992The majority of the collection relates to Captain Leslie Avery Shaw's military service in the U.S. Army, especially during World War II when he served in the 11th AAA, 49th AAA Brigade, VII Corps, U.S. First Army in Europe. Included are maps and overlays concerning operations at Utah Beach at Normandy, orders, citations, reports, photographs, letters, postcards, military ribbons and insignia, and items from his personal military file. Additional items including many photographs document his personal life after the war. Photographs, printed material and memorabilia from the 1950s and early 1960s relate to the early years of his son Robert Avery Shaw's life in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Papers (1782-1956, undated) related to the John Gideon Taylor family of Pitt County, North Carolina, including correspondence, legal papers, estate papers, financial papers, post cards, photographs, newspapers, advertising ephemera, genealogy information, Bible records, and miscellany.
The bulk of the Raymond J. Kragness Papers (1943-1946, 2000, 2004) pertains to Mr. Kragness's service in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre in World War II aboard the USS Escambia. Personal items include rites of passage membership cards (such as crossing the Equator), draft board notification, photographs, post cards of San Francisco Bay, course certificates, separation from service records and a brief family history. The remaining items pertain to his service on the USS Escambia, a fleet oiler. Included are the ship's history and directory, newsletter "Eighty Times," a list of ships fuled by the USS Escambia, plans of the day, congratulatory messages from Admiral Halsey, and invitations and tickets for commissioning and decommissioning ceremonies.
This collection contains financial records (including also bills of sale for enslaved persons) and deeds (1743-1872), and correspondence (1821-1891) related especially to Elias Fort and Dr. Matthew C. Whitaker of Halifax County, N.C. The correspondence also concerns other members of the Whitaker family and related families.
