Diary compiled (8/19/1943 - 9/15/1945) while serving as a US Navy Electrician's Mate 2/c aboard the USS Essex (CV 9) during World War II, including diagrams of electrical equipment, descriptions of daily life at sea; defending against air and torpedo attacks; attacking the Japanese-held islands of Marcus, Wake, Rabaul, Tarawa, Marshalls (Roi, Kwajalein) Truk, Saipan, Bonin, Guam, Philippines (Mindanao, Luzon, Cebu), Okinawa, Formosa, Indo-China, Tokyo, Iwo Jima, and the Japanese main islands; the naval battles of the Marianas Islands, the Philippines Sea, the Philippines typhoon of 1944, and attacks by kamikazes.

Negative files (1920-1967) and electronic files (on CDs) of photographs (1968-1989) used for the publishing of The Daily Reflector newspaper. The collection documents daily news and events in Greenville, NC and its surrounding area.

Included are eighteen photographs of American Expeditionary Force troops in athletic competition possibly taken at Andernach, Germany, in 1919. The photographs range in size roughly from 4" x 6 3/4" to 4 1/2" x 9" and 6 1/2" x 9", and three are duplicates taken at different light settings. Four different photographs show General John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing reviewing the troops and the remainder show the troops involved in sporting events such as a sack race, tug of war, sprints, and relays. Two of the photographs bear the photographer's mark of F. A. Ritter, Andernach.

Included is the July 30, 1862, issue of The London American newspaper which was published in London, England. The newspaper was only published from May 2, 1860, through early 1863 and had a pro-Union focus once the American Civil War started.

This collection consists of reel-to-reel audiotape footage of U.S. forces at Phan Rang Air Force Base or Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam, being overrun by Viet Cong attackers. The tape was recorded by Leonard D. Sawyer, Sr., while he was an Avionic Inertial & Radar Nav. Sys. Tech. on a USAF plane during the Vietnam War. Also included is a two-page summary of Mr. Sawyer's service record with the USAF (April 16, 1968 – July 31, 1972).

Papers of Lewis W. Green (1945-1984 [Bulk: 1984]) documenting the life and literary career of the Haywood County, North Carolina-born, journalist at the Asheville, novelist, newspaper publisher, and educator; consisting of manuscript materials relating to his novel The Silence of the Snakes (1984) which, like many of Green's stories concerned mountain people and was set in the 1930s; a biographical sketch of Green; and sheet music for the song David (Frances Frost) (1945).

Papers (1783–1930, [bulk 1862–1930]) consisting of correspondence, diaries, photographs, photograph albums, literary manuscripts, newspapers and newspaper clipping, a book of poetry, genealogical notes, etc., documenting the life of Commodore George L. Dyer, whose naval career spanned the years 1870 to 1908, and his family. He served in various stations, with particular emphasis on the West Indies, the Asiatic Station, Cuba, Madrid (as naval attache), and Guam (as governor).

Papers of Erskine Caldwell (1932-1982), documenting the life and literary career of the noted Coweta County, Georgia-born, American novelist of the rural poor in the American South; consisting primarily of his correspondence with Robert Cantwell; also Paul C. Richards, Autographs' description of the letters and Stuart Wright's correspondence with Paul C. Richards, Autographs relating to purchase of the letters.

Papers (1941-1961) consisting of correspondence, newspapers clippings, certificates and program leaflets.

Genealogical materials for Dixon, Haddock, Hemby, Laughinghouse, Nelson, Jenkins, Baldree, Dail-Deal, Flake, Kittrell and other families of Pitt County, NC. Also includes local history and biographical sketches by William B. Kittrell, a DVD of a Motion picture of Greenville, North Carolina (ca. 1940s-1950s) showing ordinary daily scenes and local buildings, CD of early 20th Century Pitt County schools, and 2 DVDRs made from 8mm reels of home movies (1947-1967) made by the Keel family of Greenville, N.C.

Collection consists of a single annotated manuscript titled History of Greenville, North Carolina, authored anonymously and undated. The manuscript documents aspects of the history and development of Greenville, North Carolina. Handwritten and or editorial revisions appear throughout the text.

This photograph album belonged to Hawaii native Joe Naiwi who served with "A" Company, 3110th Signal Service Battalion in Berlin, Germany, in 1946. Images are a combination of picture postcards, commercial photographs, and amateur photographs depicting tourist spots, ruins, abandoned war debris, life on the base, and candid shots with fellow soldiers, foreign troops, and German locals.

Papers (1936-1953, undated) including bound volumes, daybooks, and copies of deeds, etc. relating to the prominent Eastern North Carolina family. 8 items.

Photograph album documents missionary life in Bolenge, Congo Free State (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), at the Disciples of Christ Congo Mission in 1935 and 1936. Photographs also illustrate everyday life among the Indigenous people of Congolese.
