US Brig Porpoise Ship's Log

The ship's log of the US Brig Porpoise, dated 19 February 1845 to 16 June 1846, was kept during a cruise from New York to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. It details navigational statistics, weather reports, sightings and hailing of other ships, and punishments of crew infractions. The author was probably Midshipman Benjamin Lee Henderson and the log was signed in fifteen places by Lt. Commander William E. Hunt.

Edith D. Warren Papers

This collection (1937-2015) is related to Edith Doughtie Warren's personal life and to her time as the representative for the 8th District (composed of Martin County and part of Pitt County) in the North Carolina House of Representatives (January 1, 1999-January 1, 2013). Included are six binders related to her political career containing correspondence, photographs, speeches, committee material, clippings, campaign ephemera, and also materials related to the "Fried Chicken Caucuses" held 2001 to 2007. Five more binders document Edith Warren's long career as an educator and her family history, particularly concerning the Doughtie Family of Bethel and Mayo's Crossroads areas of Pitt and Edgecombe Counties. Also represented are photographs and documents concerning her husband Billy N. Warren's family, and Billy and Edith Warren's family together.

Eastern North Carolina Tobacco and Harkers Island Photographs

This collection contains 8" x 10" photographs taken by Edwin A. Martin when he was a professor in the Philosophy Department at North Carolina State University and Curator of Photography at the North Carolina State University Visual Arts Center in the 1990s. The tobacco images cover a season of tobacco farming in the Wendell, North Carolina, area from planting through auction. The images of Harkers Island, North Carolina, document the daily life of the local fishing population. A 1998 publication Hope for a Good Season containing some of these Harkers Island photographs is also included.

Arthur G. McIntyre Collection

Collection (ca. 1936-1997) relates to the life and career of Arthur Greenville McIntyre; an Lieutenant Commander of the United States Navy who was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate (Class of 1941) and who served in the Pacific theater of World War II. McIntyre served on the submarine U.S.S. Grenadier until it was lost in April 1943 by Japanese bombing. As a result of the attack, he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese and was not released until September of 1945. The bulk of the collection is on McIntyre's naval career but there is also material containing his biographical information and information on his time as a prisoner of war. Of particular interest are documents that have information on the Japanese who ran the POW camps and who were tried in the war crimes trials that were held in Japan. The documents lists their names and the sentences they received as a result of those trials. The majority of the documents in the collection are in English but some are in Japanese and Spanish with no translation.

A Sketch of the Catawba River at McCowans Ford was drawn by Charles Stedman and published in 1794. History of the Origin, Progress, and Termination of the American War. It shows the American Revolutionary War battle plan for the February 1, 1781, battle which took place in northwestern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, at McCowan's (later known as Cowan's Ford) on the Catawba River.
