The Phoenix Historical Society: African American History of Edgecombe County was founded in 2001 to recover, record, and promote the unique history of Edgecombe County (North Carolina) as experienced by members of its African American community. This collection contains the society's official records, brochures, event programs, and publications related to research, community events and sponsored projects.

Collection (1950 - 2011), including correspondence, photographic prints, ephemera, subject files and published materials, relating to Democratic Party politics in North Carolina and Washington, DC, especially Leggett's activities as chief of staff for Robert B. Morgan, who was Attorney General of North Carolina and U. S. Senator, 1970-1980.

Record volumes (1877-1987, undated) including Great Swamp Primitive Baptist Church Record, 1884-1980; Record of Primitive Baptist Church at Great Swamp, 1877-1915; [Great Swamp Church] Members / Conferences, 1916-1930; and loose material removed from Garner Family Bible including letters, clippings, emphemera, and Garner family genealogical information, ca. 1878-1987, undated

Papers (1756-1887) of various family members, including ensalver Edward R. Stanley who was a Craven County commissioner and president of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad, including correspondence, deeds, records of sale for enslaved persons, a will, a marriage certificate, and a map.

Papers (1843-1942; bulk 1843-1891) of Kinston, NC, attorney John Franklin Wooten and members of the Wooten, Harper and Moseley families of Lenoir Co., NC, and the Christian family of Virginia including correspondence, deeds, plats, financial records and miscellany.

Files (1969-1994) belonging to retired ECU Biology professor Dr. Vincent J. Bellis pertaining to the environmental impact of the Chicod Creek (North Carolina) channelization, the East Carolina University Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources, North Carolina Academy of Science, and material concerning the Sierra Club of NC and other environmental groups. Included are correspondence, affidavits, reports, notes, conference proceedings, environmental studies, and newsletters.

Papers (1830-2011, undated [bulk 1830-1973]) relating to the Young – Spicer family of Fredericks Hall, Louisa County, Virginia and related families living in Virginia, Mississippi and Louisiana, including correspondence relating to the civil war, businesses, taxes & family matters; journals, photographic prints; genealogical and historical files and a listing of the gravestones in the Young-Spicer Cemetery at the family home, "Locust Grove" at Fredericks Hall, Virginia. Photocopies and original documents.

Papers (1864-1958 undated) of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, lawyer, judge, legislator, and gubernatorial candidate Richard Tillman Fountain consisting of correspondence, report, clippings, newspapers, law practice documents, letters, pamphlets, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, and reports.

This collection contains publications, SACS documents including self-studies, departmental faculty meeting minutes, annual reports, student work, and policy documents from the Department of English.

This collection contains land records (1883-1900) for Edgecombe and Pitt Cos., North Carolina, financial records (1882-1901), and genealogical notes related to the DuPree family. Also included are photographs of DuPree, Morton, Boone, and Hardison (Martin Co., N.C.) family members and a 1910 class picture from Greenville High School, Pitt County, N.C.

The collection includes various aspects of public health in North Carolina beginning in the early 20th century.

The collection consists of reports, publications, advertising materials, and photographs used and/or created by the ECU College of Nursing.

These papers (1848-1882) belonged to Johnson H. Bryan, Jr.(1824-1883) of Craven County, North Carolina. Included are deeds, statements of debt and obligation, receipts, receipts for purchase and sale of enslaved people, correspondence, mortgages, bankruptcy papers, and a resolution of complaint related to tariff discriminations and maintenance deficiencies on the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad.
