The Phoenix Historical Society: African American History of Edgecombe County was founded in 2001 to recover, record, and promote the unique history of Edgecombe County (North Carolina) as experienced by members of its African American community. This collection contains the society's official records, brochures, event programs, and publications related to research, community events and sponsored projects.

Papers (1916-1935) including a photocopy of an autobiography, bound book, of professional papers and articles and copy of a lecture.

Papers (1918-2005) relating to Greenville and Enfield, North Carolina boy scout leader including his World War I Diary recounting his service in the 14th Company, 4th Training Battalion, Depot Brigade and the 218th Ambulance Company in the American Expeditionary Force in France, 1918-1919, camp schedule, list of letters received and answered, addresses of French women, debts, English - French phrase, movements, places visited, and observations on daily military activities; memorials after his death; biographical sketches and clippings; letters and clippings describing him; and photographic prints of him in his World War I uniform. In English and French language.

1866 letter from John H. Logue in Greencastle, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, to Wm. Grigg. A 20th Century letter from Mary Bailey Davis explains who someone referred to in the letter as "Miss Mittie" is.

Papers (1828-1880) including correspondence, photographs, daybook, account book, family history, a morning report form, certificate of oath, letters.

"Duties of Boys to their Country" (13 February 1944) an address by Lt. Carl Forsyth of the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to the Boy Scouts of the Greater Albemarle and the citizens of the township of Elizabeth City, N.C., at Sheep School Auditorium; also includes the orders (11 January 1944) of his commanding officer, R. L. Burke, to deliver the talk.

This collection consists of three diaries (1915-1917) written by John Ambrose Chalk documenting daily weather, agricultural activities, and interesting social events in Chowan County, North Carolina. He and his family were living on Mulberry Hill Farm while he managed the farm for Mr. Henry Wood of Edenton, N.C. Also included are transcriptions of the diaries provided by the donor along with family information, and indices to places mentioned and interesting events.

Genealogical materials given by Martha Mewborn Marble including Bible records, photographs, notes, legal documents, land records, and clippings concerning families in Greene, Lenoir, Jones, and Pitt counties, North Carolina. Some of the families included are Mewborn, Kilpatrick, Albritton, Pugh, Cannon, Batchelor, Howell, Ormond, Carr, Hardison, Taylor, Sutton, Jackson, Frye, Ham, Hartsfield, Dupree, Faulkner, Rouse, Phillips, Franklin, Joyner, Bryan, Hatch, Cox, McCoy, and Abbott families. Also included are Le-Nea, the first yearbook (1938) for Contentnea High School, Graingers, Lenoir County, North Carolina, autograph books, and a ledger (1888-1892) of Wilbar General Store, Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina. The Kayaitchess (1924) Vol. 1, published by the students of Kinston High School, Kinston, North Carolina, and the Connecting Link Commencement Issue 1926, published every other week by students of Kinston City Schools under the Supervision of Committee of Teachers have been transferred to the North Carolina Collection and have been catalogued.

Papers of John Montague (1978) documenting the life and literary career of the Brooklyn, New York-born, Irish-raised poet; consisting of the photocopy typescript of a poem entitled The Great Cloak; transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, 12/1/2014.

Papers (1892-1940, 1960-1964, 1972, 1988) consisting of correspondence, pamphlets, photographs, clippings, newspapers and a book pertaining to the life of Rev. David Wells Herring, a Baptist missionary in China. The book titled Papa Wore No Halo was written about Herring by his daughter Susan Herring Jefferies Taynton.

Collection (1944-1945) including memoir, history of USS LSM-9, off loading of tanks, etc.

Collection includes a letter written by Ann Elizabeth Bogart, Washington, N.C., to "My dear Aunt," January 8, 1865, describing wartime conditions in Washington, N.C., and vicinity, a 2-page partial transcription of the letter, a tintype of a woman (possibly Ann Elizabeth Bogart), and two color images of the gravestone for Ann Bogart and the plot where she is buried in Washington, N.C. Also included are research materials concerning David Nevius Bogart of Washington, N.C., and related to the Bogart, Biggs, O'Cain, Lucas, Bonner, Peyton, and Snoad families of Beaufort County, N.C. Photographs, genealogy notes, Bible records, and correspondence relate to the Smallwood, Williams, and Hassell families of Williamston, N.C. Letters related to brothers Will and Bruce Smallwood discuss Will's travels and death (1918) in Alaska and Bruce's life and death (after 1894) in Mexico.

Papers (1914-1988, undated) of David Balcombe, an enlisted man in the 1st Battalion, 4th Queen's West Surrey Territorial Regiment (Reserve) in India during World War I, 1914-1917; he later served as an instrument mechanic in India and Egypt in the Royal Flying Corps, 1917-1918. Consists primarily of correspondence (1914-1919) from David Balcombe to his parents in South Norwood, Surrey, England, plus clippings, ephemera, and photographs of India. Also included are letters (1928-1935) from Walter George Courtice to his sister Ruby R. Courtice, during his residency in Durban, South Africa.

This collection consists of digital audio recordings of the weekly radio program What's Happening on Ocracoke?, hosted by Peter Vankevich and broadcast on WOVV 90.1 FM in Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. The recordings document local news, civic issues, and community events and include interviews and discussions with local officials, organization representatives, and community members. Topics addressed include town governance, public services, cultural activities, and issues affecting daily life on Ocracoke Island.
