Papers of Allen Tate (1927-1996, undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted American poet, biographer, editor, essayist, novelist and educator, including manuscripts, proofs of published materials, printed materials & ephemera, loose manuscripts transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, oversized materials, by or about Allen Tate, Ellen Glasgow, John Crowe Ransom, Peter Hillsman Taylor, Robert Penn Warren, Eudora Welty, and others; in English and Latin language.
Photograph album documenting the travels (1951) of the USS Seiverling through stops in Pearl Harbor, Midway, Japan, and probably Hong Kong, participation in the Taiwan Strait Patrol, and bombardments near Songjin, North Korea. Photographs depict not only the activities of the sailors, but also activities of the local people. Also included are photographs of other U.S. Navy ships, and small boats carrying surrendering North Koreans.

Whitford Family Papers
#0937Papers (1743 – 1985) of the descendants of Martin Whitford and Nancy Purifoi (Purifoy) Whitford, of Craven County NC, including David Purifoi Whitford, Susan Cox, Addison Purifoi Whitford, Pamela Toler and Edna Whitford Fisher, and consisting of land, legal and business records, genealogical charts and a family history, a photographic print, and the constitutions of the Mt. Lebanon Church and the Broad St. Church & Secondary School 100 Per Cent Loyalty and Service Club.
This collection (2001-2008) has printed material, minutes, correspondence, ephemera and other documents donated by Dr. Keats Sparrow who participated as a member of the North Carolina First Flight Commission and its Education Committee during the 100th Anniversary celebration of the First Flight. The collection also contains a 2003 commemorative booklet "First Flight Visions celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight," information from the International Commission's 2001 Flight Symposium about the Wright Brothers, photographs, clippings, and brochures. Other items are a travel mug, automobile license plate, pins, shoulder patches and commemorative items.
Henry Otis Hyatt Papers
#0503Ledger (1880-1897) of Kinston, N.C., physician, Dr. Henry Otis Hyatt, containing accounts of patients, medical cures for illnesses, and the constitution, by-laws, and minutes of the Kinston Commercial and Trade Association. A native of Tarboro, N.C., he moved his practice to Kinston, N.C., in 1872 and established Dr. Hyatt's Sanatorium for the Diseases of the Eye and General Surgery in 1891. Dr. Hyatt was one of the best known and skilled physicians in the state, and had one of the first "free clinics" in this country. Dr. Hyatt was also instrumental in the development of the Kinston Commercial and Trade Association, later known as "The Merchants Association."
Thomas Sparrow Papers
#0001Papers (1819-1872) of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a Washington, N.C., lawyer until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was commissioned a captain in the Confederate Army in 1861 and served at Fort Hatteras until he was taken prisoner by Union forces in August of that year. After the war he returned to Washington and represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly in 1870 and 1881. Papers include correspondence, military papers, prisoner of war diary kept at Fort Warren, Massachusetts, articles, essays, speeches, accounts, clippings, genealogical notes, and Sparrow family Bible records. Also included are letters (1858-1881) written by Thomas Sparrow's son George Attmore Sparrow (1845-1922) to him describing life in Okaw/Arcola, Illinois, at Hillsborough Military Academy, in military service as a Confederate soldier, and in his post-war life as a farmer and lawyer and later as a Presbyterian minister.
A collection of Lt. Richard Norman Tetlie's military service records (1943-1946) and the official records of the USS New York's lengthy service in the U.S. Navy (1914-1948). As an officer during World War II, Lt. Tetlie trained recruits at the Ship-to-Shore Division of the Fort Emory Detachment, Landing Craft School, Coronado, CA, in the fundamentals of the amphibious ship-to-shore maneuver. He then served as the USS New York's public relations officer and official historian (1946). As a result this collection contains documents, photographs, newsletters, and newspaper clippings from the USS New York during her service.

This collection contains materials (1940s-2013) related to the interests and activities of Holley Mack Bell II and Clara Bond Bell of Windsor and Eden House in Bertie County, N.C. Mr. Bell served in World War II, worked on several newspapers including the Charlotte News, Bertie Ledger-Advance, and the Greensboro Daily News; and was employed by the U.S. Information Agency as a press attaché at several American embassies in South America. Mrs. Bell worked as a social worker, in Public Welfare, and also with social service organizations while they lived in various South American countries. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bell were active in historic preservation, especially with the Historic Hope Foundation, Friends of Hope Committee, Preservation North Carolina, the Museum of the Albemarle, and the Historic Albemarle Tour (HAT), and were active in the Episcopal Church. Included are Bertie Ledger-Advance newspapers, correspondence, publications, photographs, clippings, pamphlets, notes, and brochures.
