The Phoenix Historical Society: African American History of Edgecombe County was founded in 2001 to recover, record, and promote the unique history of Edgecombe County (North Carolina) as experienced by members of its African American community. This collection contains the society's official records, brochures, event programs, and publications related to research, community events and sponsored projects.
Papers (1889, 1907-1958) consisting of correspondence, diaries, yearbooks, scrapbook, songbook, typescript, travel accounts, photographs, newsletters, etc., related to attendance at Salem Academy and College (1908-1911) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and to the work (1917 to 1950) of Protestant Episcopal music missionary Venetia Cox (of Greenville, North Carolina) in China. Also includes letters and school materials related to Lo-I (or Louis) Yin who attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, from 1949 to 1951 on a scholarship related to Venetia Cox's music missionary work with Huachung University, Wuchang, Hupeh, China.
This collection contains draft articles written by James Batten for In Restrospect, a history of the namesakes of the buildings on ECU's campus, as well as a published version of In Retrospect.
Papers (1782-1956, undated) related to the John Gideon Taylor family of Pitt County, North Carolina, including correspondence, legal papers, estate papers, financial papers, post cards, photographs, newspapers, advertising ephemera, genealogy information, Bible records, and miscellany.
Records (1826-1990) of Chocowinity, NC Episcopal Church including Register of baptisms, confirmations and communicants, 1844-1917 (incomplete); Register of church services, 6/1/1952 - 4/9/1967; Women's Auxiliary self-study survey notebook, ca. 1955; Vestry minute book, 11/1/1989 - 10/2/1990; and Cemetery plan of 1826 (copy), 1956 and other files.
Records (May 1940-November 1945) include mainly correspondence between Thomas William Linder of Raleigh, North Carolina, and his girlfriend (later wife) Evelyn Doris Hill of Cayce, South Carolina. Mr. Linder worked for the railroad and later in life was an engineer with Amtrak. The letters from April 1942 through August 1945 document his service in the U.S. Army with the 816th Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II. He was promoted to corporal in September 1942. Other items include two photographs, holiday cards, a pay stub and a poem.
Papers (1933–1987 [Bulk: 1941–1945]) of an American Red Cross volunteer who served on Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, and New Zealand, during World War II, including three drafts of her manuscript memoir of her service entitled Red Cross Adventure that was later published as No Drums, No Trumpets: Red Cross Adventure; Invitations, 1933, 1939, to Mary Ferebee Howard to attend the inauguration ceremonies for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vice President John N. Garner, with portraits of Roosevelt and Garner; Inauguration Ceremonies Program, 4 March 1933; Official Inaugural Concert Program, National Symphony Orchestra, Constitution Hall, Washington, 4 March 1933; Inaugural information envelope addressed to Mary Ferebee Howard; Invitations to Presidential Palace, Managua, Nicaragua, 12, 19 December 1939; also photographs, programs, memos, instruction, clippings, original art, ephemera relating to her wartime service.
Papers (1917-1981 [Bulk: 1917-1918]) consisting of correspondence, clippings, and political writings relating to Sallie Lucille "Chic" Lewis MacCracken Murphy, including letters received from Ira Penberthy, J. Lee Lindstrom, John Chapman, Jeff Lewis, R. E. Longan, Milton S. Hinkley, Peo C, Ughetta, soldiers in the American Expeditionary Force during World War I, and her friends and family, including Edna Lindstrom, Margaut J. Hatton, Marie C. Marietta, relating to their training, movements, and service in France, including the torpedoing of the troop transport SS TUSCANIA and the death of Lt. John Chapman during the Meuse Argonne Offensive; also political writings of Alan R. MacCracken, 1975-1981.
Lecture notes, business accounts, newspaper articles, military papers, and artifacts of the Garrenton Family. The Garrentons include: James Francis Garrenton (1839-1913), Cecil (1883-1935), and Connell (1910-1985). They established the Bethel Clinic near Greenville, North Carolina.
This collection contains material (1818-1976) belonging to Emily Louise Loftin (May 10, 1898-December 20, 1985) of Carteret County, North Carolina. She was an educator, librarian, and historian. Included are correspondence, land records, legal records, receipts, wills, and estate records related to the Laughinghouse and Pugh families of Pitt County, N.C., the related Bright and Loftin families of Lenoir County, N.C., and the Pipkin family of Wayne County, N.C. This material was transferred from the Emily Loftin Collection at the History Museum of Carteret County, N.C. Material related to Carteret County remains at the History Museum of Carteret County.
USNA Class of 1924 scrapbook kept by John Thompson Warren (1901-1958) contains mainly photographs particularly concerning his 1921 cruise on the USS Kansas and his 1922 cruise on the USS Florida, but also contains a few documents and clippings.
This collection includes letters mailed to Thomas Milton Carr, Jr. from May through December 1864 while he was serving in Company B of 2nd North Carolina Junior Reserves. Correspondents were mainly family members living in Martindale in Mecklenburg County, N.C., and nearby counties. Topics are news related to the Civil War, events of daily life and the effect of the war on them, and information related to friends and family members serving in the Confederate Army.
This ledger (1886-1903) contains accounts for a general store in Bethel, N.C., owned by Guilford Andrews, one of the town commissioners who incorporated Bethel in 1873. Loose papers (mostly concerning Guilford Andrews in Pitt County) found in the ledger are land records (1879-1887), insurance policies (1875, 1882), tax receipts (1880-1898), receipts and bills of lading (1880-1884, 1900), a license to sell liquor (1877), business correspondence (1884) and accounts.
This collection contains Janie Tyson's coursework from her time at East Carolina Teachers Training School and a photograph of her later in life.
