The Phoenix Historical Society: African American History of Edgecombe County was founded in 2001 to recover, record, and promote the unique history of Edgecombe County (North Carolina) as experienced by members of its African American community. This collection contains the society's official records, brochures, event programs, and publications related to research, community events and sponsored projects.
The collection consists of a photograph of Edmund Burke Haywood; a journal on medical practices by Hubert Benbury Haywood Sr.; and a scrap of a newspaper from H.B. Haywood Sr.'s journal.
Papers (1858-1957) of Rev. John C. Wooten including correspondence, clippings, photographs, postcards, printed materials, and ephemera dealing with the American Civil War, telegraph operations, missionary experiences in Japan, Korea, and China, twentieth-century family life, and other topics.
Diary written by Edward L. Williams, while serving in the United States Marine Corps, describing his voyage, aboard the USS Alaska, to the European Station under the command of Captain Samuel "Powhatan" and under the direct supervision of Captain W. R. Brown, including their cruise along the Italian coast , frequent port calls, shipboard life, behavior of sailors, and his friendships and acquaintances among the ship's crew.
Records (May 1940-November 1945) include mainly correspondence between Thomas William Linder of Raleigh, North Carolina, and his girlfriend (later wife) Evelyn Doris Hill of Cayce, South Carolina. Mr. Linder worked for the railroad and later in life was an engineer with Amtrak. The letters from April 1942 through August 1945 document his service in the U.S. Army with the 816th Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II. He was promoted to corporal in September 1942. Other items include two photographs, holiday cards, a pay stub and a poem.
This collection contains a logbook (1891-1929) kept by William Hadlock Gooding (b. June 1, 1856, d. September 7, 1936), the purser for the barkentine Olive Thurlow. During this time, Olive Thurlow, which operated out of Philadelphia, travelled to New York, Boston, Savannah, Washington, Port Royal, Barbadoes, Buenos Aires, and Montevideo. Other entries in the logbook refer to the settling of accounts in Boston by Gooding for his time with the bark Grace Deering (1901-1902); and accounts (1906-1909, 1925-1929) related to his life in Yarmouth, Cumberland County, Maine.
Bryant L. Tritt was born on December 7, 1903 in Gaston County North Carolina. He kept a collection of family bibles. The collection spans 1778-1970 and includes photocopies of genealogical records from Tritt and his wife's family Bibles listing births, deaths, and marriages, etc. The Strength of the collection is the Tritt-Whitley family of Gaston County, Davie County, and Davidson County, North Carolina genealogical records.
William and Harry Whittaker were brothers who both served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. William mainly served in West Germany while Harry was sent to Vietnam in 1967. Their letters to each other cover the years 1964 to 1968 and discuss both basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and their service in West Germany and Vietnam. Also included are numerous photographs taken by Harry while he was stationed in Vietnam.
Papers (1933-1973) of U. S. Marine Corps aviation officer (Major Gen.) who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and who retired as commander of the Cherry Point, NC Marine Air Station, including correspondence, reports, war diaries, citations, certificates, and military records. Genealogical materials given by Martha Mewborn Marble including Bible records, photographs, notes, legal documents, land records, and clippings concerning families in Greene, Lenoir, Jones, and Pitt counties, North Carolina. Some of the families included are Mewborn, Kilpatrick, Albritton, Pugh, Cannon, Batchelor, Howell, Ormond, Carr, Hardison, Taylor, Sutton, Jackson, Frye, Ham, Hartsfield, Dupree, Faulkner, Rouse, Phillips, Franklin, Joyner, Bryan, Hatch, Cox, McCoy, and Abbott families. Also included are Le-Nea, the first yearbook (1938) for Contentnea High School, Graingers, Lenoir County, North Carolina, autograph books, and a ledger (1888-1892) of Wilbar General Store, Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina. The Kayaitchess (1924) Vol. 1, published by the students of Kinston High School, Kinston, North Carolina, and the Connecting Link Commencement Issue 1926, published every other week by students of Kinston City Schools under the Supervision of Committee of Teachers have been transferred to the North Carolina Collection and have been catalogued.
Records (1955, 1960-2016) of the Pitt County Historical Society (of North Carolina), including minutes, bylaws, correspondence, and clippings, photographs, financial records, programs and photographs. Also included are the records (1949-1950) of the Greenville Music Club, the Red Banks Home Demonstration Club (1946-1950), old Greenville advertising fans, and a scrapbook for the Town and Country Senior Citizens Club (1978-1999).
Papers (1892-1940, 1960-1964, 1972, 1988) consisting of correspondence, pamphlets, photographs, clippings, newspapers and a book pertaining to the life of Rev. David Wells Herring, a Baptist missionary in China. The book titled Papa Wore No Halo was written about Herring by his daughter Susan Herring Jefferies Taynton.
Collection contains newspapers (1945-1978) from New York City, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida related to special events such as the end of World War II, the Vietnam War, the death of U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Apollo astronauts landing on the moon, hurricanes, and the Bicentennial of the U.S. Also included in this collection are postcards (postmarked 1906-2008, with the bulk of them being 1906-1944) of scenes and buildings in North Carolina, several European countries, Morocco, and several Central American and South American countries.
