Collection (1899-2004) of printed materials compiled for the centennial of the Orville & Wilbur Wright's first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina; including an article written by the Wright brothers on their flight experiments with various airplanes coupled with printed copies of photographs and a printed reproduction of the article; also copies of Monthly Weather Review magazines from August-September 1899; and a copy of the North Carolina Literary Review dedicated to commemorating the centennial of the first flight complete with poetry and interviews; also two calendars illustrated with images of the Wright brothers flight experiments.
This collection consists of three diaries (1915-1917) written by John Ambrose Chalk documenting daily weather, agricultural activities, and interesting social events in Chowan County, North Carolina. He and his family were living on Mulberry Hill Farm while he managed the farm for Mr. Henry Wood of Edenton, N.C. Also included are transcriptions of the diaries provided by the donor along with family information, and indices to places mentioned and interesting events.
This collection contains material (1818-1976) belonging to Emily Louise Loftin (May 10, 1898-December 20, 1985) of Carteret County, North Carolina. She was an educator, librarian, and historian. Included are correspondence, land records, legal records, receipts, wills, and estate records related to the Laughinghouse and Pugh families of Pitt County, N.C., the related Bright and Loftin families of Lenoir County, N.C., and the Pipkin family of Wayne County, N.C. This material was transferred from the Emily Loftin Collection at the History Museum of Carteret County, N.C. Material related to Carteret County remains at the History Museum of Carteret County.
Papers (1830 – 2010, undated) [Bulk: 1940-1970] documenting the life of Robert Lee Humber, Jr., who was born 30 May 1898 – and died 10 November 1970, in Greenville, North Carolina; after attending local schools he earned a BA from Wake Forest College, 1921; he then attended Oxford University in the United Kingdom as a Rhodes Scholar, 1921-1923; he then earned a MA from Harvard University in 1936; he moved to Paris, France, in 1926, where he married and served as an American Field Service fellow, 1926-1928, and subsequently earned a fortune as an international lawyer, art dealer, and businessman, 1930-1940, until the Fall of France, in 1940, when he, his wife, and their two sons, John and Marcel, fled the German invasion - his infant daughter Eileen died during their escape - and he returned to North Carolina, where he purchased a farm on Davis Island, established a legal career, and devoted himself to public service and to a wide range of philanthropic causes, as an educator, civic, cultural, political and religious leader; beginning in 1940, he became well-known nationally and internationally for establishing and leading the World Federation movement as a way to promote lasting world peace through international law; statewide for persuading the General Assembly and the Kress Foundation of New York to fund and establish the North Carolina Museum which opened in 1956; also as an art collector and patron of local and regional volunteer organizations; as a Democratic state senator from Pitt County, 1958-1964; as an educator who led the effort to create Pitt Technical Institute (later Pitt Community College); as a leader in the Southern Baptist denomination becoming a member of the Board of Trustees of Wake Forest College and other Baptist institutions; and as an attorney and business leader and developer; additionally, the collection includes historical files documenting the history of the World Federation in the United States, compiled by his son, John Leslie Humber.

Collection consists of five scrapbooks containing items related to the life of Judge Oliver H. Allen (b. March 20, 1850, Wake Co., N.C.; raised in Duplin Co., N.C.; d. December 16, 1925, Kinston, N.C.) and his ancestors and descendants. The date span covered is 1826 to 1980. Of particular interest are items related to Judge Allen's life, the Hicks family of Granville Co., N.C. (1826-1832 and photocopies of documents for late 1700s), the WWI service of William A. Allen and Judge Allen's sons Matthew H. Allen and Reynold Tatum Allen, and the lives of Judge Allen's daughter Martha Allen Barnes and her daughter Sarah Allen Barnes who married Benjamin Bruce Sugg, Jr. Items include clippings, correspondence, Oxford Academy and Trinity College student materials, photographs, resolutions, WWI military records, funeral bulletins, booklets, prints, and postcards. Collection includes a letter written by Ann Elizabeth Bogart, Washington, N.C., to "My dear Aunt," January 8, 1865, describing wartime conditions in Washington, N.C., and vicinity, a 2-page partial transcription of the letter, a tintype of a woman (possibly Ann Elizabeth Bogart), and two color images of the gravestone for Ann Bogart and the plot where she is buried in Washington, N.C. Also included are research materials concerning David Nevius Bogart of Washington, N.C., and related to the Bogart, Biggs, O'Cain, Lucas, Bonner, Peyton, and Snoad families of Beaufort County, N.C. Photographs, genealogy notes, Bible records, and correspondence relate to the Smallwood, Williams, and Hassell families of Williamston, N.C. Letters related to brothers Will and Bruce Smallwood discuss Will's travels and death (1918) in Alaska and Bruce's life and death (after 1894) in Mexico.
Records (May 1940-November 1945) include mainly correspondence between Thomas William Linder of Raleigh, North Carolina, and his girlfriend (later wife) Evelyn Doris Hill of Cayce, South Carolina. Mr. Linder worked for the railroad and later in life was an engineer with Amtrak. The letters from April 1942 through August 1945 document his service in the U.S. Army with the 816th Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II. He was promoted to corporal in September 1942. Other items include two photographs, holiday cards, a pay stub and a poem.
This collection contains materials (1940s-2013) related to the interests and activities of Holley Mack Bell II and Clara Bond Bell of Windsor and Eden House in Bertie County, N.C. Mr. Bell served in World War II, worked on several newspapers including the Charlotte News, Bertie Ledger-Advance, and the Greensboro Daily News; and was employed by the U.S. Information Agency as a press attaché at several American embassies in South America. Mrs. Bell worked as a social worker, in Public Welfare, and also with social service organizations while they lived in various South American countries. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bell were active in historic preservation, especially with the Historic Hope Foundation, Friends of Hope Committee, Preservation North Carolina, the Museum of the Albemarle, and the Historic Albemarle Tour (HAT), and were active in the Episcopal Church. Included are Bertie Ledger-Advance newspapers, correspondence, publications, photographs, clippings, pamphlets, notes, and brochures.
