The largest portion (1911-1947) of this collection (1837-1993) contains correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera related to the extensive charitable interests of Mary Estelle Crawford Fry, her husband James Woods Fry and son Gilbert Crawford Fry, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The charities include the Bethel Mission operating out of Hong Kong at the time of this correspondence (1938) due to war in China, the San Miao Orphanage in Saratsi (Suiyuan Province) of Northern China [later became part of Nei (Inner) Mongolia], the China International Famine Relief Commission, missions dealing with French and Belgian orphans of WWI, and the International Students' House conducted by the Christian Assoc. of the University of Pennsylvania. Earlier correspondence (1837-1869), unrelated to the above mentioned charities, is mainly written between Mrs. Mary M. Crawford of Boston, MA, Mrs. Addie A. Stien of Norristown, PA, and Sower family members in Boston and Norristown. Also included are family photographs and family history information related to the Chitty, Stroup (Strup, Strupe, Strub), and Ruede families of Forsyth Co., NC.

Papers (1892-1940, 1960-1964, 1972, 1988) consisting of correspondence, pamphlets, photographs, clippings, newspapers and a book pertaining to the life of Rev. David Wells Herring, a Baptist missionary in China. The book titled Papa Wore No Halo was written about Herring by his daughter Susan Herring Jefferies Taynton.

Collection (1766-2010) consists of items related to the Augustus Moore (June 8, 1803-March 23, 1851) family of Chowan and Halifax Cos., N.C., his children Augustus Minton Moore, William Armistead Moore, Henrietta Moore Sutton, Susan Augustus Moore Righton, Mary Elizabeth Moore, Alfred Moore and John Armistead Moore, and the descendants of John Armistead Moore. Included are account books, legal records, land transactions, estate records, correspondence, clippings, and autograph books (1855, 1865) belonging to family members who attended Miss Willard's Female Seminary in Troy, N.Y., and Patapsco Female Institute in Ellicott City, Maryland. Also included are identified photographs (cartes de visite, tintypes, cased pictures, albums) of the Moore, Gilliam, and Skinner, families, religious books such as Roman Catholic Missals, Episcopal Books of Common Prayer and Bibles, UNC-Chapel Hill diplomas (1824), and items related to the 1878 Exposition in Paris, France.

Interview (ca. 1920-2002) with East Carolina Teachers College student from Winterville and Rountree NC, who left school after one year to serve in the Army during World War II in Italy, Yugoslavia and Kosovo, and who spent most of his career working in an automobile parts store on Cotanche Road, Greenville, N.C. Papers (1933–1987 [Bulk: 1941–1945]) of an American Red Cross volunteer who served on Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, and New Zealand, during World War II, including three drafts of her manuscript memoir of her service entitled Red Cross Adventure that was later published as No Drums, No Trumpets: Red Cross Adventure; Invitations, 1933, 1939, to Mary Ferebee Howard to attend the inauguration ceremonies for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vice President John N. Garner, with portraits of Roosevelt and Garner; Inauguration Ceremonies Program, 4 March 1933; Official Inaugural Concert Program, National Symphony Orchestra, Constitution Hall, Washington, 4 March 1933; Inaugural information envelope addressed to Mary Ferebee Howard; Invitations to Presidential Palace, Managua, Nicaragua, 12, 19 December 1939; also photographs, programs, memos, instruction, clippings, original art, ephemera relating to her wartime service.

Collection (1917-1933, bulk 1918-1919) mainly consists of correspondence (29 May 1918-29 April 1919; 115 letters) between U.S. Army Pvt. Roscoe Jackson and his wife Lucile E. Jackson of Barnesville, Belmont Co., Ohio, and also with his father, mother-in-law, and grandfather during World War I. He writes from Camp Sherman in Chillicothe, Ohio, Camp Mills in Long Island, New York, and from France where he is serving with the 138th U.S. Infantry, A.E.F.

Captain Stuart Hotchkiss describes his experiences as a young man in yachting and international yacht racing. Having been a Naval ROTC student at Yale University, Hotchkiss received a US Naval Reserve commission and volunteered for active duty in April 1941. His wartime experience in command of the schooner BOWDOIN while conducting hydrographic studies along the coast of Greenland, in command of the COOLBAUGH (DE 217) and his final wartime command of the DD 939 (former Z-39) are all discussed as is his postwar time in command of the USS GRIDLEY (DD 380).

Collection contains World War II maps previously belonging to CPL Kirby Singleton of the 71st Armored Field Artillery Battalion. Included are maps of the movements of the 71st Armored F.A.B. and Battery "B" of the 387th AA (AW) Battalion for July 28, 1944, through May 9, 1945; map showing the advance of the 5th Armored "Victory Division" from the Rhine River to the Elbe River March 31 through April 23, 1945; and a portion of the 5th Armored Division map (undated) showing movements in France, Luxembourg, and Germany.

The collection consists primarily of photographic, blueprint, journals, class photos, and other advertising materials used and/or created by the Medical News & Information department of East Carolina University.

Papers (1866-1874, 1899-1964) including correspondence, diaries, daybooks, reports, certificates, photographs, manuals, clippings, an army register, notebooks, etc.

This collection contains materials (1940s-2013) related to the interests and activities of Holley Mack Bell II and Clara Bond Bell of Windsor and Eden House in Bertie County, N.C. Mr. Bell served in World War II, worked on several newspapers including the Charlotte News, Bertie Ledger-Advance, and the Greensboro Daily News; and was employed by the U.S. Information Agency as a press attaché at several American embassies in South America. Mrs. Bell worked as a social worker, in Public Welfare, and also with social service organizations while they lived in various South American countries. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bell were active in historic preservation, especially with the Historic Hope Foundation, Friends of Hope Committee, Preservation North Carolina, the Museum of the Albemarle, and the Historic Albemarle Tour (HAT), and were active in the Episcopal Church. Included are Bertie Ledger-Advance newspapers, correspondence, publications, photographs, clippings, pamphlets, notes, and brochures.

Papers of Allen Tate (1927-1996, undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted American poet, biographer, editor, essayist, novelist and educator, including manuscripts, proofs of published materials, printed materials & ephemera, loose manuscripts transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, oversized materials, by or about Allen Tate, Ellen Glasgow, John Crowe Ransom, Peter Hillsman Taylor, Robert Penn Warren, Eudora Welty, and others; in English and Latin language.

Records (1761-1936, 1942-1981) including correspondence, legal and financial papers, estate papers, receipts, financial records, surveys, newspaper clippings, photographs, bills of lading, genealogy, stock certificates, corporation minutes, and land records.

Papers (1918) of U.S. army officer candidate from Elizabeth City, NC, including notebooks of training notes, army manuals, special orders, and an equipment inventory.

Collection (1911-1956, bulk 1918-1919) consists of material related to Roy S. Fisk who served as an Army cook with Co. C, 131st Engineers, AEF, stationed in Le Mans, France, during the latter half of World War I. Included are correspondence, papers related to Fisk's military career, war-related publications, French guide books and souvenir photo albums from places he visited in France, a postcard book from the USS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, and Vol. 1, No. 19, April 10, 1919, issue of The Bulletin which discusses issues in France and the military career of Brigadier General George S. Simonds. Also included are some papers and ephemera related to his post-military life.
