This collection includes letters mailed to Thomas Milton Carr, Jr. from May through December 1864 while he was serving in Company B of 2nd North Carolina Junior Reserves. Correspondents were mainly family members living in Martindale in Mecklenburg County, N.C., and nearby counties. Topics are news related to the Civil War, events of daily life and the effect of the war on them, and information related to friends and family members serving in the Confederate Army.
The collection includes materials (1898-1959) documenting the work of Shackleford Banks native Josiah Clark Chadwick working on freighters running from North Carolina to New York, and then with the Army Corps of Engineers in North Carolina (1927-1959) working the Eastern N.C. federal waterway projects on diesel engines and then inspecting dredges. Included are family history, Chadwick's work history, training materials, engineers' level books, logbooks, and inventories of engineering property in Chadwick's charge.
Papers (1705-1983, undated) including correspondence, diaries, genealogical records, legal and financial records, club records, photographs, clippings, surveys, and miscellaneous.

This collection contains materials (1940s-2013) related to the interests and activities of Holley Mack Bell II and Clara Bond Bell of Windsor and Eden House in Bertie County, N.C. Mr. Bell served in World War II, worked on several newspapers including the Charlotte News, Bertie Ledger-Advance, and the Greensboro Daily News; and was employed by the U.S. Information Agency as a press attaché at several American embassies in South America. Mrs. Bell worked as a social worker, in Public Welfare, and also with social service organizations while they lived in various South American countries. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bell were active in historic preservation, especially with the Historic Hope Foundation, Friends of Hope Committee, Preservation North Carolina, the Museum of the Albemarle, and the Historic Albemarle Tour (HAT), and were active in the Episcopal Church. Included are Bertie Ledger-Advance newspapers, correspondence, publications, photographs, clippings, pamphlets, notes, and brochures.
Photograph album documents missionaries from Cass Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church of Detroit (Michigan) in China (ca. 1900-1917). Photographs depicting local life and scenery such as street scenes, a Peng (tent cart), street vendors, Chinese Theatre scene, temples, Boxer ruins used as a boarding school and teachers and their students, are accompanied by ephemera such as programs, memorials and prospectuses.

Samuel Ringgold, the first American officer to die at the Battle of Palo Alto during the Mexican War ; Ringgold Barracks was renamed Fort Ringgold in 1878 ; Ringgold Barracks had been abandoned by the US Army during the civil war and was only reestablished in 1865 when this detachment of the 29th Regiment US Colored Troops arrived ; the army sold the fort to a local school district in 1944 ; prior to serving at Ringgold Barracks, the 29th Regiment had served as part of the defensive force for Washington DC ; digital copy available ; brittle, fragile, some foxing ; needs conservation.
