Papers (1830-2014, undated) [Bulk: 1895-1970] of the Humber Family, documenting the lives of Robert Lee Humber, Jr. (1898-1970) and his extended family, including the papers of his father, Robert Lee Humber, Sr. (1864-1952), a businessman and inventor and his mother, Lena Clyde Davis Humber (1870-1936) and her family, of Kinston, Greenville and Davis Island, North Carolina; his siblings, John Davis Humber, MD (1895-1991), Leslie Mumford Humber (1907-1925), and Lena Dye Humber Smith (1902-1973); also including his wife, Lucie Julie Jeanne Berthier Humber (1895-1982) and the Berthier family of Villeneuve and Paris, France, and their children and grandchildren, families, educations, careers, activities, and writings; including correspondence, files, ephemera, museum objects, published materials and oversized materials, arranged generally in alphabetical order by the donors.
This collection contains oral histories by individuals connected to the university, including alumni, faculty, staff, and donors.
Included are a copy of the Daniels-Murphrey Family History compiled and edited by Eleanor Daniels Casey in 1993, a photograph of the USS Nebraska that Benjamin Daniels of Wayne County, North Carolina, sailed to Europe on in WWI, and three photographs of Benjamin Daniels in his WWI US Navy uniform.
Interview (1915-2003) with Washington (NC) native including discussion of her family, early life, education, relationship with Cecile B. DeMille, employment as secretary in the National Youth Administration and for Rep. Captain Stuart Hotchkiss describes his experiences as a young man in yachting and international yacht racing. Having been a Naval ROTC student at Yale University, Hotchkiss received a US Naval Reserve commission and volunteered for active duty in April 1941. His wartime experience in command of the schooner BOWDOIN while conducting hydrographic studies along the coast of Greenland, in command of the COOLBAUGH (DE 217) and his final wartime command of the DD 939 (former Z-39) are all discussed as is his postwar time in command of the USS GRIDLEY (DD 380).
